  • On Tuesday, Democratic National Committee (DNC) members at the party’s summer meetings rejected Resolution 18, which called for the recognition of a Palestinian state, a ceasefire in Gaza, an arms embargo, and a suspension of military aid to Israel.

Instead, members backed a status quo resolution introduced by DNC Chair Ken Martin, which simply called for more aid to be allowed into Gaza and a two-state solution. Despite the support, Martin went on to withdraw the resolution.

Lmao didn’t even want to commit to having more aid allowed in which is like absolute minimum you could ask for.

“I know that there are some who are interested in making changes today, but as we’ve seen, there’s divide in our party on this issue,” said Martin. “This is a moment that calls for shared dialog. It calls for shared advocacy, and that’s why I’ve decided today, at this moment, listening to the testimony and listening to people in our party, to withdraw my amendment and resolution.”

Martin says he will establish a task force “comprised of stakeholders on all sides of this” so that they can “bring solutions back to our party.”

“Starting a dialog” “establishing a task force” , might as well just say all that can be asked of you is writing a strongly (but not too strong) worded letter.

  • Yeah it may be pragmatic to do some kind of deal with the US to gas up trumps ego and reduce the chance of a western backed coup.

Like you said though it would need to be similar to how China went about it with state owned companies.

  • Yeah I’m hoping the leadership in each country turns this down. What’s the point of kicking the French out if your just going to jump back into the neocolonial pit by selling the country to the US?

I’m optimistic though since all that’s been said is that the US has offered this deal. If I’m remembering correctly Burkina Faso recently got military equipment from China so hopefully that relationship countries to grow.

    Edit:

Actually not just military equipment, found a couple articles on different agreements. Seems they’re pretty solidly choosing China over the US.

  • Finally made the switch over to Linux yesterday, kind of cool it was on the anniversary!

  • I read Imperialism with the reading group and want to read the other 3 after I’m finished with “How Europe Underdeveloped Africa”.

Which order would you recommend the other 3 in?

  • I’m actually planning on reading that at some point this year as well.

Right now I’m listening to the Proles Pod series on Stalin since I heard good things about it. I’m on episode 3 and it’s been pretty good.

  • From the prospective of liberal economists/politcs:

This has never happened before and markets don’t like uncertainty so I’d expect a negative reaction.

It calls into question of the independence of the fed which is something that’s always been sold as one of the reason the dollar is so valued and trusted.

  • Someone else will hopefully have more specific details on the situation.

In general the economic situation isn’t great due to the blockade since as an island nation they have to Import anything (like oil) that isn’t a natural resource on the island. Blackouts and other energy issues have been a problem due to that.

Trump recently increased the blockade and I know due to COVID their tourism industry was hit pretty hard.

Some silver linings to the situation:

China has provided solar panels that should help strengthen their grid and provide them a source of energy that can’t be blockaded.

They recently became a BRICS partner member which should hopefully give them some ability to trade even with the blockade.

Vietnam recently has raised millions in an ongoing effort to send donations to Cuba.

    Edit:

Also if anyone is interested in learning more about Cuba and its history I’d recommend the podcast Blowback season 2.

Adding some links to explain how democracy and elections work in Cuba and why the government still has such large public support:

  • I know others have said it already but Rodney writing is just so easy to read and understand.

It’s really a travesty he was taken so early.

  • Took the babies on my in laws big circle swing and they loved it!

  • Third, reject the myth of the “clean weapon.” There is no such thing. All war harms. If a blackout kills a patient, the line between bomb and sabotage vanishes.

I don’t disagree but find it funny that the same people that will say this about China having a graphite bomb would not apply the same logic to something like sanctions or the deaths that capitalism causes by keeping the working class poor.

  • The constitution that was instated in 2019 during his first term has a term limit of 2. He was able to run for a third term since the courts ruled that since his first term was before this constitution it didn’t count.

Trying to run again though goes against the term limit. MAS tried to pass a referendum in 2016 to change that so that he could run again but it narrowly lost.

I believe he tried to have the courts change the term limit in the run up to this election but not sure on what ground they tried to pitch that and it didn’t work.

  • I’ve only been following it a bit so someone else can hopefully add more details.

The election for president took place on 17/8 but since no candidate won a majority it now goes to a runoff on 19/10.

Due to Evo not being able to run and the infighting between him and Acre he pushed his supporters to submit null votes so MAS did not make the cut. So we’re in a waiting period to see who will win but either way it’s a blow to the left in the country.

My understanding is that Evo still has large support from the indigenous groups and they may be looking at a non electoral route but haven’t heard much details on that and have no idea if that’s even feasible.

Edit: Deleting my last 2 paragraphs as @rainpizza@lemmygrad.ml has a much better comment covering those.

  • Great news!!

  • You’re right I do remember the deals and BRICS partner news now.

Pivoting will take time so makes sense the leadership is trying to minimize the tariff damage in the meantime.

I don’t have a great frame of reference for the reparations amounts to the farmers though, would you consider those fair?

  • Thanks for sharing! Burkina Faso has been one of the few bright spots in recent world news.

Really cool that Thomas Sankara’s brother is alive to see his brothers work revived!
