    There’s some books that go more in depth I have in my want to read list that I’ll edit in later once I have a chance although I think there almost all in the article as sources.

  • Thanks for sharing that! Absolutely wild that there’s a clause that explicitly says that many core rights can be annulled even if “temporary” if you just lose one election basically.

    Feel like most western “democracies” try to be a little less obvious about how not guaranteed citizens rights are.

  • The notwithstanding clause is basically a mechanism that provincial and federal governments can use in Canada to pass temporary laws that are likely to violate the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms

    Damn let me guess it’s limited to only violating this rights given to citizens in this charter and can’t be used to say take private property from capitalists if a providence were to get super based in the future?

    Or am I misunderstanding what’s in the charter?

    Also it was only very recently like late 2024 that they won.

  • I think a stronger UN in the way they pitch it (more permanent members required to veto than just 1 country, membership suspended for violating charter, etc.) would help limit US intervention which would be better for the global left.

    But I don’t think the US agrees to that though even if they think it could limit Russia or China. There’s way too many votes (Cuba Embargo, Israel, etc.) that they and 2-3 of their vassals are the only countries in the whole UN voting against something that they’d then lose with a reformed UN.

    As far as how they’ll steer the story, the main character make a one off comment about Stalin in a very negative way but she is also very unlikable so I’m not sure which way they will go with it.
