  • Do dogs and cats have dominant front paws?

  • I think people who do sports with their dogs are likely to be able to see these preferences easier. I do agility with mine and there's a lot of time spent watching their feet and seeing where and how they start and land jumps and such. He tends to favor his left and will typically lead with it. When we're doing scentwork he also raises his left paw to signal as well. He uses both paws for all sorts of things, but I believe he does favor his left!

  • Eggs are also used in a lot of baked goods. If you're cooking at home and making a lot of things from scratch, eggs are common ingredients. In addition to that they're also an excellent source of protein that doesn't require any forethought or planning to just make in minutes. My husband and I go through a dozen every 7-10 days depending on what I'm making. That's not a ton, but considering most grocery prices are up it's frustrating. I can cut back on a lot of things, and I can make alternative recipes that don't include eggs for a lot of things, but then those things have a different texture, less protein, or can't exist at all. I'm already cooking nearly everything from scratch at home to save money as it is. Not buying eggs is a bigger sacrifice than many realize, especially for someone that loves to bake.

  • While I don't disagree that it engages different parts of the brain, reading audio books is still beneficial, and no studies have shown a demonstrable difference in a person's comprehensive ability using physical vs audiobooks. In fact, some groups like the National Literacy Trust have shown that audiobooks can be beneficial for engagement in education and if used properly, beneficial to the learning process in general. Humans (and our precursors) spent millennia conveying stories, culture and history entirely through verbal storytelling. As a species we have spent more time listening to stories and absorbing them that way than physically reading them.

    While there is certainly a difference between reading and listening to books, I absolutely would not criticize anyone who chooses to pick up an audiobook vs not consuming books at all. Seeing words spelled out and the punctuation within the writing is helpful, especially for those learning to read or learning the language. But audiobooks are still books and as far as I'm concerned you "read" the book if you listened to the audio in full.

  • I definitely commiserate with this. This is almost certainly the biggest moral quandary in my life. I think in my lifetime there will be a tipping point where vegetarianism will be a large enough minority to make it personally viable for me, but for the moment I reduce consumption where I can. Breakfast sausage will be the hardest thing to give up for me - but I continuously try meat alternatives in hopes of finding something I like.

  • You know, I'm extremely tired of hearing people piss and moan about the Democrats not accomplishing legislative miracles with the barest of majorities. The GOP is almost gleeful in being a bulwark against anything and everything that might possibly be seen as a Democratic win. We can't have nice things because 49% of Congress just wants to watch the other party suffer and cling to power by calling them ineffective.

    What the fuck have the Republicans done that have helped the average working class American in the last twenty goddamn years?

    They're nothing but rhetoric and religious fundamentalism. They had full control of both houses and the presidency and assured us we would have some great replacement to the ACA and literally nothing ever came of that. The Republicans don't want to help Americans, they just want to be in power. Why isn't that relevant? The Democrats can't pass sweeping legislation because of obstruction and that's the end of the world, but the Republicans have literally no ideas beyond removing rights from whatever flavor of "other" they're targeting this season and they get a pass.

    Our country is fundamentally broken. One party's politicians say they want to represent all Americans and the other wants to use the military against their political rivals. And somehow the election is still close? Yeah. This whole country is fucked.

  • Newspapers are allowed to endorse candidates because the first amendment protects free speech. While I may agree with you that endorsements and news media stumping for ANY candidate is problematic and reeks of propaganda, it is, for better or worse, protected by the constitution.

  • Makes sense. We send everything through it by default and then we have a separate device group for non-Pihole DNS handling. Devices such as work computers that might get weird or have issues get put in this group. Everything else is by default put through Pihole until we have a reason otherwise.

  • Pihole has always worked as expected on my Pixel phones. To the point that I have to drop off of our wifi to visit some sites when they don't load correctly. Pihole is happening at the router level though, not a setting on my phone. Unless Android starts tunneling around it (I wouldn't put this past Google), then all traffic will continue to go through Pihole since it's going through our router. Any device connected to our network has Pihole as its DNS.

  • Many cats die every year from them actually, just like children. I am super vigilant about hiding mine out of the way so ours can't see them to play with because I'm terrified of it happening. I really just need to replace them, but they're the nice heavy wooden white ones and throwing them out seems like such a waste.

  • Dame Maggie Smith was a gem in everything she was in. Her performances elevated every piece of media she performed in. I would watch movies just because she was in them, and I never regretted that. Today is truly a sad day. Rest in peace. She gave the world countless masterful performances and now the curtain has closed.

  • Part of why cats like you is probably because you don't like them and seek them out. Most cats are wary of people directly trying to approach them without invitation or greeting. In general cats will find the person ignoring them the least threatening and most approachable.

    It never fails that cats tend to flock toward the person that is allergic to them, because that person is typically entirely disinterested in them lol. Not being interested in the cats is likely why you make friends with them so quickly!

  • So um, why are the houses and nature mutually exclusive? I live in a suburban detached single family home, and my whole neighborhood is filled with trees, wildlife and even a tree lined creek that separates the back yards on my street from the back yards on the opposite side. You can't even see my actual yard from google maps because it's nearly entirely covered by tree canopy (at 6pm in summer my yard is 100% shaded). We have all sorts of wildlife including deer, foxes, owls, frogs, mallards, rabbits, squirrels, etc.

    While I agree that we do need more housing options of all sorts, I don't for a second agree that nature and suburban housing are mutually exclusive. We just need to stop tearing down all the trees when we build, and plan better.

  • While I agree with your sentiment, there is a difference between not understanding and actively disparaging. The former is fine - there's plenty of stuff I don't understand, and I just don't comment on it because I have no business doing so. Where I take objection is when the lack of understanding transforms into bigotry and disparaging remarks.

    By all means be ignorant (and I don't mean that in a derogatory manner - we are all ignorant about various things), but don't let your ignorance manifest into negativity.

  • Sleep As Android is hands down the #1 app on my phone I cannot give up. It's THE reason I could never switch to Apple. I've gone beyond basic use and now have it automating things based on sleep actions and I kind of love it.

  • I would argue that if the attacker has physical possession of my yubikey, that alone means the accounts tied to it are vulnerable. While the information isn't technically wrong, I feel like that headline is misleading and this isn't as big of a deal as some would like to make it out as.

  • Honestly, being an adult is pretty similar to being a kid, except you have more freedom. I still have to spend 8 hours a day doing something I don't particularly love, except on weekends where I get 2 days of free time. I have to take the results of what I've done all day and turn them in to other people (homework = bills), but there's a little leftover for fun time/stuff.

    Here's the big difference, and why nobody can ever convince me that childhood is superior to adulthood - if I decide to make bad choices and have ice cream for dinner, or stay up until 2am on a weeknight, nobody is going to say shit.

    The freedom of adulthood that allows ME to decide if I want to make a choice I know will hurt me later is the best part. IDGAF what anyone says, sometimes I want pancakes and ice cream for dinner.

  • Erm, not arguing that this lady is middle class, but dog insurance cost is not remotely relevant to that lol. I pay that for my dog and make less than 6 figures. My dog is just really important to me, and our last dog cost us thousands and thousands of dollars on vet bills. I'm not going to be blindsided dropping $5k in a day on vet bills again. Our dog has insurance because it seems like the financially responsible thing to do, especially when your dog is extremely active and engaging in sports that it may be injured doing.

  • In my opinion it depends on the game. Games as good as BG3, with no micro-transaction crap and a bit of updates for bugs and some patches? I would pay more for it and gladly. BG3 feels easily worth $120 to me.

    The problem is, other studios will see BG3 able to charge that, then go try doing it themselves, riddle it full of micro-transactions, release it half baked, and then gaslight us by telling us we're being unrealistic with our expectations.
