    He doesn’t joke. He said tariffs are coming for Europe and they will. Canada 51st state isn’t a joke.

    To be honest Canada’s feeling pretty alone and abandoned by the international community. Other allies should also be standing up to this nonsense. This isn’t how we all stand up to bullies.

    I don’t think it’s a factor about him being old. He’s a figurehead. It’s the tech bro billionaires and ghouls he’s putting in place to operationalize their own plans. This includes dismantling democracy. That’s not just going to stop with the US.

    Just because we have advertising and campaign donation limits it doesn’t mean billionaires and foreign nations aren’t going to use propaganda online and otherwise to dupe low information voters.

    It doesn’t mean our politicians aren’t open to bribes that kick into effect after they leave office such as corporate no-show jobs. I’m stink-eyeing Pierre and his ilk in particular here.

    I’m not sure what we do to stop these things. Some ideas:

    Stop using American social media to distribute official messaging. The federal government should not use X and should not recognize it as a legitimate platform, full stop. We should move to the fediverse.

    No contracts and no business for Elon Musk or any of his companies in Canada. He can get the fuck out and stay out.

    No contracts awarded for foreign-owned companies or Canadian companies whose ultimate parent is a US corporation. They’ll have to pass their business through a Canadian-owned contractor who will take a healthy cut. Nova Scotia might be doing this at the provincial level.

    Remove tariffs from Chinese EVs or, alternatively the existing Asian manufacturers in Canada need to cut us a better deal. Chinese EVs are competitively priced. The traditional auto manufacturers are making it impossible to own a car for most regular people. Canadians are stuck in an endless cycle of leasing their vehicles and this should stop. I don’t like the prospect of not owning my car.

    Americans who own property in Canada can pay more tax on that.

    And we need to tax our 1%.

  • From a Canadian… I like American people. I don’t want anyone to suffer. It’s been hard enough.

    I’m sad that this is happening. As they said on our news network - Canadian soldiers died in Afghanistan for the US, we harboured stranded Americans after 9/11, we helped to fight the fires in California, and many other things.

    I don’t want to fight with our neighbours to the south. At the same time, this is incredibly disrespectful and offensive, especially since we’ve always had America’s back. We don’t believe for a second this is about fentanyl or immigration so the President can drop the bullshit on that.

    I’m disappointed that America was so blind this election and voted for Trump. I’m incredulous that your elected representatives are so spineless and money-driven. I’m shocked that there’s not more public outrage related to Citizens United, Roe, and what’s just happened with the FBI.

    The best outcomes for this as a Canadian are basically that we’re going to have to ramp up our own manufacturing, and that it damages the ambitions of our own little Canadian Trumpler.

  • Whaat? How is it at all fair to kick these people out of their homeland? Especially after Israel’s response was so incredibly disproportionate when compared to the October 7th attacks. Like what 3k people vs well over 40k??? Bombing hospitals???

    Given Trump’s comments about the real estate in Gaza let’s not pretend he just doesn’t want to give it to Israel if he gets a piece of the development pie. Let’s not forget Netanyahu was visiting Trump before he assumed the presidency.

    It’s not right. The Palestinians should have their land back. The only moral solution is a two state solution. The only secure solution is a two state solution. Dispossessing regular people and effectively kicking them when they’re down isn’t exactly a deterrent to terrorism.

    I fear they’ve already decided what they’re going to do and now they’re just trying to make everyone buy it.

But I still don’t think you’re interpreting your comments and part in all of this as charitably as I have been on my side.

Saying ‘Do not promote mythology or ideology as reality’ sounds prescriptive, as though you’re making a strong recommendation about what people should or shouldn’t do, especially in the context of your initial comment (discouraging spending money on a Bigfoot convention). Thank you for clarifying that is not what you meant.

    I think we’re still at an impasse in how we define scam, but that is ok.

    My basic counterpoint to that is: No one forces anyone to believe anything. People are allowed to believe what they want.

    If you believe harm is caused do you think anything should be done about it?

    I think there’s a difference in liability sure. Financial pyramid schemes are where people choose to invest their money but then that money is misappropriated. The scammer takes money for a service and doesn’t do what they said they will do with it.

    If I choose to bet my life’s savings on GME and purchase the shares then yeah that’s my own fault (as long as insider trading / pump and dump on the other side has not occurred). No matter what people “pushed” me to believe (as long as this doesn’t cause violence or harm to others), the responsibility on following through with those beliefs is mine.

    Just like I said if someone is leading a paid Bigfoot wilderness excursion into the woods then yes I think there could be an argument for their liability if people die on their tour. Just as there’s liability if people die skydiving or bungee jumping.

    If someone tells me Bigfoot is out in the woods on Christmas Eve and as an adult I choose to believe them that is my choice, not theirs.

    I’m just saying we have to be careful calling ideologies dangerous or saying that people are being “pushed” toward things - lots of people argue that LGBT and trans ideology is dangerous. I think they’re ridiculous bigots for saying that but we have freedom of expression in most western countries. If I want to be able to freely express my opinion, other people have to be able to freely express theirs.

    No one can enable an adult to do anything. They are adults who make choices.

    Who is anyone to tell people that they can’t publish a book or make a piece of media (as long as the topic is not illegal). That’s some authoritarian shit right there.

  • I think we can go down a really deep hole of all of the dumb shit that people die from because they believed something false that was sold for a profit. Apart from what we as a society have agreed upon as the most abhorrent opinions/beliefs and have legislatively banned, I’m really not comfortable with branding media or books as dangerous (see all the book banning nonsense going on in the US).

    No matter what way you slice it - it’s their choice isn’t it. Adults are allowed to do what they want, even if it’s fringe, and people can’t stop them.

    People are allowed to express and sell points of view that I disagree with as long as they’re not inciting violence or directly causing harm to people. People are allowed to listen. I am only responsible for myself and my choices.

    And just because these people made poor choices, it doesn’t mean that everyone into the topic would do the same. I think it’s less that they believed in Bigfoot and more that they were unprepared for the wilderness.

    No one told them to go into the woods in the dead of winter. They weren’t on a paid wilderness tour. They chose this for themselves and got into trouble. It’s unfortunate that it happened at Christmas.
