  • If a distributor for Korean movies in the US was the only company that subtitled a movie in Spanish for example, then Netflix would have to make a deal with them to include subtitles for every region. It might be that the distributor themselves may not have the rights to distribute those subtitles outside the US as well.

  • Do your best to stop doing so. In the meantime, find a psychologist/psychiatrist/go to your family doctor. If you can't afford one, try finding community health clinics.

  • The point is that even if CD or DVD drives aren't produced nearly as much, there is still a market for newer drives that still support CDs and DVDs.

  • In Texas, Tex-Mex.

In the US, it's really hard to say. We're too diverse.

  • They haven't had any kind of drive for a while now. You know what does though? Game consoles.

  • Their lawyers argued in court that they were a source for entertainment, not news.

  • Since 2004, we got smartphones which replaced a huge chunk of technology, internet has become far faster and more accessible leading to streaming services like Netflix and freelance video platforms like YouTube exploding, far fewer people having cable TV, kids growing up with online video rather than TV, social media went from simple platforms meant for communication with friends and family to behemoths meant to capture as much of your attention as possible, misinformation has become more trustworthy to many than traditional news, public school classrooms gained access to technology like Duolingo as learning aids, physical media has been phased out in basically all homes except those with video game consoles, software purchases have been replaced with subscriptions, and now we have programs that can create realistic-looking images and videos, human-like passages, and real-sounding speech.

Saying that none of that is as groundbreaking as the Internet is kinda like saying the Internet wasn't as groundbreaking as electricity. Just because the effects are subtle doesn't make it any less groundbreaking.

  • Can't speak for Canada, but in Texas, if your landlord doesn't maintain the property properly, you are allowed to withhold the amount of rent needed to pay for repairs.

  • More of a reason for me to stay and vote. I don't plan on having children soon, and me leaving the state won't make it any better for other Texans who can't leave even if they need to.

Regardless, even if I can't make the state better for women or LGBT+ people, there's always a different group I can make it better for.

  • Nah, I'd rather make it better. Outside of what's politicized, I think we have potential.

  • Just as an aside, I've really only had 1 negative experience with a cop and have met many great cops as of late. I'm a Texan, and I'm definitely not white. I wanted to mention this because even though police forces as institutions have huge issues, the people in them are just as varied as everybody else. I doubt it's just your race - your area probably has plenty of good apples.

Anyway, I hope stuff gets better! Hopefully you'll get the treatment(s) you need and can find a stable living situation soon.

  • Think of the shareholders!

  • How long until the IDF sends targeted missiles?

  • The malware, sure, but you're ignoring how they were able to push the malware in the first place.

  • I wasn't joking.

A good chunk of scam calls and texts come from people who themselves are victims of kidnapping. Many of those victims (primarily in Asia) got into the position they were in because they were looking for work, went to a different country to start a promised job, and then got trapped and forced to work for scam centers that do social engineering attacks.

These scam centers are sophisticated to the point where they can develop very legitimate-looking crypto trading platforms for targets in the US and other wealthy countries. They then assign one of the kidnapped people to a target. These kidnapped people then social engineer their way for months to get what their captors want - usually money in the aforementioned trading platform. Then, they cut all contact once they have control of the funds.

How does this relate to XZ? Well, if they can kidnap ordinary people looking for jobs, there's not much stopping them from including devs in their pool of targets. Afterward, it's just a rinse and repeat of what they'd done before.

If you want to look more into pig butchering, John Oliver has a great episode on it.

  • I'm surprised that nobody suggested that he was a kidnapped dev. This seems like a different implementation of the pig butchering scams that target ordinary people.

  • I'd argue that although it didn't directly lead to change, it most definitely will eventually
