  • Like I said, I ignored it because I didn't know. I thought it better to be silent than wrong.

So I addressed the only other point you made.

  • The visibility issue is a direct response to your suggestion to making it private.

I read the trans men issue as a red herring to center men's voices. I'm not sure about that so I let it fall by the way side.

Your final paragraph just said this is a bad way to handle it. There's no response here because it's a valid concluding paragraph if the previous points hold water. Obviously, I don't think they do.

  • 🌎👨🏾‍🚀🔫🧑🏾‍🚀

Without subtext the only way to read this comment is they are celebrating echo chambers. They aren't. Subtext is hard.

  • You don't address the visibility issue. Disappearing is not the solution.

  • Making it private limits visibility. Lemmy has a lot of men on it. A private women's only space would be hard to find for the limited number of women.

  • Subtext is a difficult concept.

  • Right... Because a man's opinion is the only thing needed to stop the echo chamber.

Edit: safe spaces are not echo chambers.

  • I obviously have no problem with that.

  • Their mistake was being too specific about who was doing it, the IDF, and what should be done to them specifically, death to them.

Liberals get queezy at the idea of direct intervention unless they've been whipped up into a patriotic frenzy first. They need vague moral allusions without assign blame or responsibility or even recourse. "What's happening in Gaza is tragic." Of course, this is with owning their role in allowing this to get to this stage and that's why it's important not to assign any blame.

  • There's nothing wrong with it if two people go clear eyed about it. But relationships always have layers of hidden expectations. Mutual love and respect can navigate those rocky times.

I don't have much going for me

Since this relationship is purely transactional, what do you have to offer? What do you have to offer that they can't just buy without the long term liability?

  • This is bullshit. What people want is someone is willing gut the DNC of the old guard. They need people who care, but also someone whose willing to create a political program where the voters needs come before the donors and politicians. Everyone knows that the Republicans before 2016 and the the Dems of the last 50 years only saw the voters as an inconvience to what they each thought they were entitled to.

  • Unfortunately, I heard some Democratic news analysts on the FT Swamp Notes podcast say basically that. That you can't really do what you say when you campaign. That you campaign in poetry and govern in prose (whatever that means). They were referring to Mamdani's aggressive critique of billionaires and how he suggest silly things like free bussing.*

They will say that they didn't lie. That they would love to do all this stuff. But we have to be realists here. And the things is if you critique them, they call you a child.

Whatever happens in progressive politics, we need to be careful. I don't know if we can make it far with out the establishment, but if we do ride along side with them, we should make it clear that we have the will of people behind us and we should expect them to betray us the first chance they get.

The more establishment person wrapped her critique in how free bussing doesn't solve the issue with the subways. This reminded me of how Republicans criticized Biden's work on student loan forgiveness because tuition was still high. Neither side is wrong, but let's do something that makes a difference for the average person.

  • Kissinger also helped scuttle the 1968 peace talks in the early stage. Kissinger, with through careful inference or by leveraging his network, informed the Nixon campaign that peace talks were underway.

The Nixon administration, though Anna Chennault, encouraged the South Vietnamese to drat their feet in their talks. They promised more favorable conditions if they waited until Nixon won the election. Which he did in 1968.

    Peace talks concluded in 1973.

  • Go to a record store. Talk to someone who loves to talk about music. Buy something. Listen to it. Go back next week.

  • Grad school. Unless your getting a professional degree with a license that protected by the state and the profession is well established and compensated, don't waste your money and time if you could see yourself doing anything else.

Hell... Undergrad might be sliding into this category as well.
