I've been thinking about it for a while. Back when I started getting more serious about internet privacy I had the idea of switching to a de-Googled phone but when I found out that'd be expensive as hell I had a second idea to get a flip phone and spread out what I use it for across devices. My laptop for services like YouTube and streaming, MP3 player for music, a digital camera for my camera, etc. Also expensive but the individual devices are cheaper so I can more easily slowly chip away at it, first thing I'm getting is an MP3 player because I got my Dad to buy me one for Christmas.
Who would they even go to war against? The who's from Horton Hears A Who? Doubt that'd go well for them considering they have an elephant on their side.
I got my computer in 2022 and switched to Linux this year so for a 3 year period I got to experience Windows 11 get worse in real time. Co-Pilot being built in is what completely broke me I think.
If they just shoved ChatGPT or some other big LLM into it, probably yeah. For actual good results you'd need to make your own LLM trained specifically to do dialog and not much else. Even then it'd be SLOW AS HELL even with powerful PCs.
The only somewhat understandable thing I can think of GenAI could have a use for in games is shoving an LLM into one to get more dynamic-ish dialogue. Everything else just sounds terrible on paper and IS terrible when executed. I saw a trailer for a fully AI-generated game and it looked like the most shovelware garbage ever.
There's so much bullshit with smartphones now that make them a pain to use, I'm honestly considering at this point to just get a flipphone and buy separate devices for the things it can do. Get a camera, MP3 player, and portable DVD player and live life the way people did 20 years ago.
I don't really blame my Dad for it, he's in a pretty bad spot money-wise. He has to support him, my stepmom, my sister, my two stepsisters PLUS the newborn twins one of them just had, my little brother, my cousin that lives with us, two dogs, a turtle, AND myself whenever I come over. We had so many people living with us at one point he had to set up some new walls and doors in what used to be my little brothers toy room to turn it into two separate bedrooms.
He voted for Trump entirely because of his belief that if he became president again, we would be as financially stable as we were when he was first president. Back when we could afford going on a camping trip twice a year, back when our fridge was regularly stocked with ingredients to make our own lunches, back when he could afford to buy a whole 200$ game console for my birthday, ect. That hasn't ended up happening and every time I get a glimpse at the news he's not any closer to doing that. If my Dad was ever a "Trump supporter" I doubt he is now.
I wouldn't know cause I was 12 when he first got elected, too busy playing my PS3 and talking with my friends on Google+ to check the current state of the economy.
I've heard that there's phones that use Linux, so I imagine once modifying Android isn't an option focus will probably go into making that more viable.
My Dad told me during a ride in his truck that he was voting for Trump again because he lowered prices for things in his first term and thought he'd do it again. Every bit of news I have seen of him since is shit that's making Dads financial situation worse.
Something you learn quick about degoogling is that there's just some services that cannot ever match up with their product. Google Maps is one of those products.
