  • You can hardly consider it compression when you need a compute expensive model with hundreds of gigabytes (if not bigger) to accurately rehydrate it

  • A deep fake is still humiliating

  • The rules are in place solely to lock in free apps to the official App Store. The EU is just going to have to tell Apple to deal with it. Apple is acting like it has to verify and sign every app that runs on its platform and therefore it justifies the fees. The EU just needs to force Apple to allow unsigned apps to run and then its not a problem.

  • John Oliver was able to buy data of politicians to get them to click on porn of Ted Cruz or something a long those lines. Thats the route we have to go to get this changed. Like when leaking Bork's video rental history got privacy protections passed in the 80s

  • If you could travel back in time and observe a person over and over again react the same way is it different from observing a video tape?

Does traveling back in time guarantee that someone would react the same way in the same situation even?

  • If new releases aren't going to be available in stores, I simply won't watch them when they come to home video anymore. The upside would be that I will be more motivated to see movies while they are still in theaters which I've sorely lacked going to see them ever since the pandemic

  • The quality of Netflix content does not reflect cost of the subscription. I’m back to buying DVDs

  • Sadly chromium is often the only supported browser for a lot of web apps. Sometimes not even chromium but just chrome in particular. Chrome has basically inherited all the downsides of internet explorer of yesteryear except it doesn’t run like shit yet.

  • That is the quote from the article, not my words. Stochastic parrot is an oxymoron.

  • How do you know a human wouldn't do the same? We lack the ability to perform the experiment.

I agree with you, I think its an interesting philosophical debate on whether we truly have free will, if we really have a level of understanding beyond LLMs do or if we are just a greatly more complex, biological version of an LLM. Like you said, we lack the ability to perform the experiment so I have to assume that our reactions are novel and spontaneous.

  • A child under a certain age usually can't explain advanced concepts either, so the inability to understand one concept doesn't preclude understanding of others.

  • Is there a difference between being a "stochastic parrot" and understanding text? No matter what you call it, an LLM will always produces the same output with the same input if it is at the same state.

An LLM will never say "I don't know" unless it's been trained to say "I don't know", it doesn't have the concept of understanding. And so I lean on calling it a "stochastic parrot". Although I think there is some interesting philosophic exercises, you could do on whether humans are much different and if understanding is just an illusion.

  • If you have the urge to watch sports or take a bite of the NFL then there are ways, matey

  • Most of the people on the fediverse are adults who are most likely going to join either a general instance or a themed instance for interests for adults and not for a children’s book series, especially not one with a TERFy author

People like SpongeBob, I don’t think there is interest for a SpongeBob instance. Nevertheless if you think there is interest in it, feel free to host your own.

  • It depends on how heavy handed the approach is. A kid could learn about using a vpn or proxy service to bypass dns or dpi based content filtering but if you properly configure the parental controls on iOS or android there is pretty much nothing they are going to be able to do. If they are that determined, I think you need to have a conversation about making good choices themselves and trusting them not to consume harmful content.

I was able to bypass the content filters on the PCs when I was in high school because it was a shitty content filter that could be bypassed by killing the process in an unelevated task manager. My kids are going to have to be more resourceful than that

  • I absolutely agree on that last point. The web has become so SEO and algorithmically focused and that’s why I’m so all in on the fediverse to put power back into the hands of the people and not whoever can use an LLM to crank out content to exploit the algorithms

  • I’ve always considered that I make my personal site for me and write for my own knowledge management. So a lot of my writings are guides on how to do something so I won’t forget.

I’m also not a great writer so I don’t know if I would want the wider internet looking at my stuff

  • It's not the IPO that will cause the exodus. Its the first actions that Reddit takes to appease shareholders that will cause people to leave

  • They can use the information to try to send you fake invoices to try to scam you, or use your personal information to social engineer you or your relatives, attempt identity theft etc. Basic info-sec is still important. It's like leaving the bathroom door open when you poop. It probably isn't going to hurt you if you leave it open but its still probably a good idea to shut the door if its a public restroom
