  • TikTok being banned is good. Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter should be banned as well. Closed, source, manipulative and harmful algorithms should be banned and these apps all use dark patterns in their design.

The fediverse and open social networks where the algorithms are open source and well understood and the user is allowed to choose their own algorithms is the only safe way to use social media.

  • It is political, every other Democrat doesn’t want to be punished by voters for being the party that banned tik tok.

  • They don’t want Trump to get the credit for overturning the ban. So. Ow they are trying to rush it so that Biden can try to take credit.

  • I mean you have to subscribe to a feed to be able to see it and I don’t see how RSS could sync a feed you don’t even know about. I suppose if someone started a platform that everyone used to sync their feeds then people could uncover content from the RSS feeds of other users but that seems to take the really simple out of really simple sync (RSS)

  • The problem isn’t the algorithm just because it’s an algorithm, even chronological sort is technically an algoritim.

The problem is closed source algorithms with no user choice that implement dark patterns and other addictive and psychologically abusive tactics to make users engage with their app as much as possible

  • Is Elon trying to say he deleted his own brain because his behavior would prove that theory

  • Why not ban both if we are concerned about the harms of algorithmic content?

  • China subsidizes their infrastructure and industries which is why they are able to produce cheaper than domestic.

There really isn’t a good answer in these kind of trade wars other than outright banning, tariffs, or heavy subsidies to your own industry.

In these cases countries are determining national security concerns outweigh environmental concerns. Not saying it’s right or wrong but that’s where we are

  • I think we can agree that modifying a cookie such as that Honey does to steal commissions and blocking a cookie in its entirety as a security or privacy measure are material different actions.

So I find the concerns that Honey getting sued and having to pay damages could open up ad blockers to getting sued overblown.

You can quantify damages equal to the amount of commissions paid on purchases actually made in Honey’s case (and on the consumer side with the difference in discounts provided by Honey withholding the best coupons it claims to provide)

You can’t quantify damages made by blocking ads or tracking cookies as advertisement and tracking doesn’t directly translate to sales

  • There is no reason why the complaint can’t be specific to modifying just attribution and commission cookies. And ad blockers mostly work by blackholing DNS request to ad servers and manually editing DOM and removing elements that load content from known ad services. If an ad blocking extension modifies cookies it’s typically just blocking them entirely (something every browser has built in) not editing them.

  • Killing windows would just be a little happy accident

  • Or you can bridge your account using bridgyfed and be on both with one account. This what I’m currently doing to access some a bluesky and make some of it accessible to me on mastodon. I really wish more people on bluesky would opt into the bridge at least, technology connections is one of the few that are interesting that have bridged. (He was on mastodon but decided to forego that to just bridge his bluesky account to the fediverse

  • Jrose11 for mostly gen 1 and 2 solo runs of pokemon games (although he covers most of the series as well)

  • I’m a big fan of his series covering the entire NES and GB libraries on YouTube as well as retronauts!

  • Wow, I knew Zuckerberg was a jerk and I knew he was right wing. But I didn’t think he was one of those rightwing immature edgelord jerks on the level of 4chan posters

  • If you don’t know what you are doing and ask LLMs for code then you are gonna waste time debugging it without understanding but if you are just asking it for boiler plate stuff, or are asking it to add comments and print outs to console for existing code for debugging, it’s really great for that. Sometimes it needs chastising or corrections but so do humans.

I find it very useful but not worth the environmental cost or even the monetary cost. With how enshittified Google has become now though I find that ChatGPT has become a necessary evil to find reliable answers to simple queries.

  • It might if they show support for their gay or trans colleagues

  • That part I understand, but how can I get those first followers? And if I am just going to join the flagship instance, why wouldn’t I just join bluesky since it has more users.

Just trying to give a reason why people might shun mastodon for blue sky, this isn’t supposed to be a real argument against Mastodon. I’m on it and love it
