  • So it may be worth $10 for some people, then. I am fine with a cheaper game with slightly worse graphics. I am not sure I even notice if a game is running at 60 fps or 30 fps. Even when a game dips below 30, I notice it getting a bit choppy, but a game should be engaging enough that I will not pay it any attention.

  • Not really. People on Lemmy are paranoid. Not saying that corporations are not assholes looking to maximize how much of your money they are getting but they are not out to hurt you. Believe it or not, corporations actually want consumers to like them. Most corporate actions are not evil, they are caused by workers being lazy and cutting corners.

    What seems more likely? Nintendo testing remote bricking of systems on customers instead of QA or Nintendo OS developers not having firmware ready by the time manufacturing started (and IT scrambling last minute to bring up update servers in time for launch).

  • Isn't it rumored that Nintendo has been manufacturing Switch 2 hardware for years? Those early manufactured consoles are not going to have a fully functional OS. Makes sense that they have a basic firmware that can connect to the update servers and fetch the released OS once it is available.

    They know that someone is about to spoil the release date, so they quickly throw together a tweet to control the message and buy time for a more comprehensive and thought out announcement as part of the Nintendo Direct.

  • According to the article, the upgrade will get you "a higher resolution and improved framerates."

    For me, that upgrade is not worth it. I will play the game entirely in portable mode and my vision is not what it used to be, so I don't care about resolution.

  • You still get company swag? In the 2010's, I got a ton of it, but not anymore. Maybe it is just that the company I was working at got too cheap to give out swag and when I switched jobs, I joined another cheapskate, but I assumed that it was the same everywhere.

    I have enough company and recruiter swag collected during the good years that I have not needed to buy t-shirts, especially because I generally wear a collared shirt over them, so I don't care what logos and slogans they have.

    From what my friends working in retail have told me, the trend is (temporarily) reversed. Every freight container going to the US is getting booked solid at inflated rates as brands try to bring in merchandise from non-Chinese factories into the US in case the tariffs resume.

  • I still have 2 Reddit accounts in good standing. I used Reddit entirely via the Reddit Is Fun app. I tried the official Reddit app but the ads flooded out content and performance was trash.

  • You and I are very different then. If I tell someone that dinner is at 6 and they give me a thumbs up, I would interpret that as "I acknowledge that I heard you and have no objections. It is not worth taking my attention off of whatever I am doing."

    1. I assumed that the code was running on a machine that Lu controlled.
    2. Most companies I have worked at had code reviews, but it was on the honor system. I am supposed to get reviews for all the code I push to main, but there is nothing stopping me from checking in code that was not reviewed (or getting code reviewed and making a change before pushing it). My coworkers trust me to follow the process and allow me to break the rules in an emergency.

  • Different crimes. Swartz was charged with breaking into the MIT network and destroying it, because he connected to their guest Wi-Fi and used (way) too much bandwidth. From what I heard, both the copyright holder and prosecutor only wanted to give him a slap on the wrist and firm talking to. It was MIT network support/campus police that insisted on accusing him of every crime possible.

    If you want a better case to compare it to, cite the cases brought by Metallica saying that their album did not sell 10 billion copies because a single mother listened to it without paying.

  • Did they say for sure that there will not be any game announcements before April? I was hoping, since Nintendo has officially announced the system, developers would start listing it as a release target for their games. Even Nintendo might have a new game trailer and put a sneaky "for the Switch 2" at the end.

  • I agree that Honey is a sleazy extension, but should I be worried that if they lose, it will set a bad precedent? From the video, the Honey extension works by injecting a Honey referral code into all online shopping transactions, possibly overwriting whatever influencer referral code the user was under. If Honey loses, the court decision is likely to say that an extension creator is liable if they tamper with referral codes and tracking links.

    This will be a problem for privacy extensions that strip out tracking cookies and referral URLs, since they are also messing with influencer attribution, though not for profit but at the request of the user.

  • If they have a great meta-search algorithm, users would be able to search without an account and see how great the results are. Then, when a user wants to personalize ranking and block sites, they can create an account.

    I always assumed that they make you create an account to track search usage and cut you off once you hit the free tier limit.
