The person I know is aging but is an avid cyclist. Sadly they are no longer able bodied to ride a normal bike and keep up with the majority of the other riders they ride with. Having that assistance allows him to get out on the bike. Without it he would no longer be riding a bike.
My dad also got an ebike MTB because riding a normal bike just isn't an option anymore. He's approaching 77.
I live in a hilly area and often see older people out on their bikes in the summer. They all use ebikes.
I'm talking about a typical enthusiast road cyclist rather than the average Joe out on their bike or commuting to work on bike paths. I whole heartedly agree that on bike paths and inner city commuting that we don't need people zipping around busy streets.
The people I know, who ride socially but on road bikes, have modified their ebike to allow them to go faster as on flat roads they simply cannot keep up with the rest of the group. Obviously it's completely the opposite way round as soon as there is elevation involved.

I started dual booting to Arch Linux and more often than not I boot more now into Linux than Windows 11. I've used Windows since 3.11. Microsoft really have fucked Windows recently.
This is the same with everything. Twitter, Google, Facebook, Netflix, Amazon, Apple etc. They all shit on their users, people complain but then they just accept it. As long as people just keep sucking it up they'll continue to do what they want.
Yes, a royal pain in the ass. However. I did it recently but the way I did it means any future moves, of all my 300+ websites that I have logins for, is now done in seconds.
I signed up for SimpleLogin and a custom domain. I then went around creating aliases for all these sites. Changing the sites is indeed the worst part. Still, this is the last time I will ever do it. All my aliases were pointing to my Gmail account. Once I'd finished I settled on Proton. I just moved all my aliases to my Proton email address.
No one knows my Proton email address other than SimpleLogin.
I haven't yet, but I can now ditch Gmail. I still keep the account for a number of reasons but none are for emails.
I've also been testing Tutamail. I can get aliases to go to multiple mailboxes. I have the ability to respond to the emails from either Tuta or Proton and the recipient is none the wiser of where my mailbox resides.
The sending mail server will keep trying for a period of time. Eventually though it will give up and return the email to the sender with an error message.
I ran PiHole for years. It started as a way to block ads but then also a way to block games and YouTube for my kids so they get a break. I had to manually control this though. I switched to NextDNS last year because this can be done on a schedule and they can't get around it such as swapping to mobile data on their phones.
In the house though I run AdGuard because there's no way differentiate traffic for each of my kids NextDNS profiles. With AdGuard it can proxy DNS requests to take traffic from the TV in their bedroom and convert it to DNS over TLS so the traffic hits the correct profile. I don't use AdGuard for anything else. It does not filter anything. It's purely to make sure traffic hits the correct NextDNS profile.
I ran Linux in VirtualBox for years but it's just not the same as running from bare metal. The step to bare metal is the key to actually starting to make the move to Linux for me
Get a second drive and install Linux on it. You can then flick between the two on boot. I've done this and now booting into Arch more than Windows. I'll still boot into Windows for reasons but Arch is my main OS now.
