It’s a bit in Umineko, basically the main character is named Battler and has that as their kanji name. The other characters have a similar name scheme, so I’m wondering how much license that affords me if I want to link original names to kanji

Oh, got it. Yeah, that’s a pretty common thing in Japanese media. I see it a lot for techniques in manga where the kanji will have an English (in katakana) reading next to it to make it more “exotic”.
