Ask me food safety and food science questions.

What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?

The goal this year (2026) is to lurk less and post and comment more.

  • That look so good.. I didn't eat beetroot until I came to Australia. I had a housemate serve it to me, and it was actually quite pleasant! Haven't had pickled beetroot yet, though.

  • I did use quite a bit of oil (canola), but I think my fatal mistake was frying onions in the pan first. Should have used a clean pan for the potatoes. :(

  • Which part of Canada are you from? Maybe hashbrowns are a West Coast thing..

  • Hmm.. Maybe it's just a Lower Mainland BC thing...

  • Thank you for the detailed instructions! I'll report back the next time I make these. 🫡

  • Oh yeah, cheese!! I've done cheese scones, and I recommend a sharper cheese so the flavour comes through after baking.

  • Omg 😂 in my defence, they aren't really browned when I find the commercial ones in the freezer aisle. I did try to brown them, but they started to stick to the pan, so the browned bits separated from the cubes. :( I think the McCain ones are flash deep fried so they don't stick to your pan at home. I've only made these a handful of times, so I'm still perfecting it. One day, I will get it right!

  • Ohhh right. Hmm, maybe more of a Canadian thing, then. I grew up seeing McCain hashbrowns in cubes, so that's what it is for me. Thanks for teaching me something today. 😊 Maybe I'll spend a few weekends making different kinds of hashbrowns in the next while!

  • Oh, definitely. I'll have to give your hashbrowns a go next time I have a lazy Sunday. I think I've tried this year's ago, but I can't remember. I think you mix flour in it so it holds better? I'll have to research this again. Thanks for the idea!

  • Oh, those look soooo good.. I can already imagine and taste the fluffy goodness lathered in butter 🤤 Well done!! And you're right - everyone has to start somewhere.

Next, you could add a little bit of garlic, onion, and bacon for a more savoury treat.

  • Oh, I also LOVE hashbrowns in shredded potatoes form, but I don't get those often since I've only seen them in some restaurants. Never in Australia so far in either Sydney or Melbourne.

Thank you! Yup, all hand cut. I can do the first and second direction of slices very uniformly, but when it comes to the cubing step, 0.5cm becomes 0.3-0.8cm 🥴 so I end up getting some cubes overcooked and some undercooked, but still entirely edible.

  • I can't remember where you're from, sorry. Tbh, I will devour anything potatoes no matter what it's called 🤤

  • I have a family of magpies visit nearly everyday. I think it must have started because previous renters were probably feeding them. The mum showed up first, and then a adult male, and then two babies. Very quickly, the babies would show up on their own. One of them even taps on the window and flies up by the door lock to try to come in if it sees me. I don't let them in - it'd be a nightmare of chaos, feathers, and terror poops.

I give them some sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and on occasion, walnuts, cashews, and some plain cooked chicken breast if I have any. They're comfortable enough with me to eat out of my hand, and discipline their kids in front of me 😂

Also, I'm now learning their preferences. The older baby bird really likes cashews and will give me the stink eye if I offer anything else. The other day, I offered a sunflower seed, and it came around to give me a nip (gentle) on the finger as if to tell me it wanted something tastier.

  • Delicious! I wonder if putting in a bit of mustard would add to the flavour? Maybe I'm reminiscing about my last trip to Germany...

  • I was clearly on the downhill towards bed time 😂

  • I've sometimes just put on a sprinkle of zaatar, or if I want something sweeter, just a bit of your standard BBQ sauce.

Mayo is often my go-to, so I definitely put that on as a standard, and then one of the above!

  • Hmmm.. When the weather cools down, I'll give this a go. If I remember and if my experiment is successful, I will post it. 😁

  • That's looks so delicious and comforting 🤤 I don't think we have garlic knots in Australia, so I might need to try to make some. They look like they'd be pillowy soft with a healthy amount of butter and garlic!

So I know for the future... Do you remember where you got them?

  • I hear ya. Thanks for all the tips! It's just me and my partner, so really, how big of a unit do we need anyway.
