Technology@lemmy.world•DEF CON bans Meta-style 'pervert glasses'English
7·1 month agoiOS version: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/nearby-glasses-original/id6761056896
I see some others in the iOS app store that claim to detect nearby “smart” glasses via BLE. I have not tested any of them, so I have no opinion on their usefulness, reliability, privacy, etc:
Nearby Glasses (same name, different app): https://apps.apple.com/us/app/nearby-glasses/id6776279207
Nearby Lens: Glasses Detector: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/nearby-lens-glasses-detector/id6760046620
NoGlasshole: Glasses Detector: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/noglasshole-glasses-detector/id6760988897
Nearby Glasses Ray-Ban Scanner (in-app subscription required): https://apps.apple.com/us/app/nearby-glasses-ray-ban-scanner/id6760216782
That’s true of pretty much everything. As John Von Neumann put it, “Truth is much too complicated to allow anything but approximations.”

1·4 months agoI’d be tempted to modify my user environment as much as possible, so the ways I use it wouldn’t be transferrable to anyone else’s environment. I’ve already done this to some extent, with e.g. nonstandard command line aliases and highly-customized wrapper scripts around the tools I use a lot.
Reminds me of this:

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Anyone got any informative YouTube channels that DON’T use AI slop?English
1·6 months agoI’ve actually been really impressed by some of their recent videos. I especially liked the one on jet turbine blades (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtxVdC7pBQM), and their explanation of how displacements propagate through crystals, and how the blades are made with variations in crystal structure that limit that propagation. Yeah, they’re using clickbaity titles on it, but the content’s solid.

91·6 months agoLooks like it happened in Chicago, last october. From what I can find, they dragged her off, shuffled her around for a few hours, then released her without charges. In December, she was one of the people that testified before congress about ICE’s abuses.

After the standard deduction, that’d still put them in the 12% bracket, even if they’re single. And that 12% is just the marginal rate, not the overall rate.
If single person made $60k in 2025, and only got the standard personal deduction ($15,750), that deduction drops their taxable income to $44,250. Of that:
The first $11,925 is taxed at 10%, so $1,192.
The rest ($32,325 = $44,250-$11,925) is taxed at 12%, so $3,879.
Their total income tax is thus $5,071 (=$1,192+$3,879).
$5,071 / $60,000 = 0.08452, meaning they’d pay an effective tax rate of 8.452%.
