  • That's a good point, but from the article that you linked they had been completely absent from the continent for up to 10,000 years, until they were reintroduced by the Spanish:

Equus flourished in its North American homeland throughout the Pleistocene but then, about 10,000 to 8,000 years ago, disappeared from North and South America. Scholars have offered various explanations for this disappearance, including the emergence of devastating diseases or the arrival of human populations (which presumably hunted the horse for food).

Despite these speculations, the reasons for the demise of Equus in the New World remain uncertain. The submergence of the Bering land bridge prevented any return migration of horses from Asia, and Equus was not reintroduced into its native continent until the Spanish explorers brought horses in the early 16th century.

  • That's pretty funny that they want to save the wild horses considering horses aren't even native to the Americas.

  • It's not about buying things, it's about winning the game and staving off boredom and existential dread.

  • No, it's still profit. It's profit that's reinvested into growing the business. Profit is revenue - operating costs. Scaling is not an operating cost, it's an investment.

  • How do you know that redditor finished school? There are kids on the Internet.

  • So it's an llm description of the photo? And a printout of the exif data? I'm not sure what this is trying to prove

  • Just because she was ok with it when you first started dating doesn't mean she has to accept it forever. That is a lot of money to spend on a a hobby. Especially if you guys haves shared finances, it's reasonable to make financial decisions together, and to cut back spending if it's excessive or find ways to compromise.

  • You're correct, but somehow PC became a term for a windows, or non-mac computers. Probably because of all the advertising apple did to set Macs apart from other computers.

  • You would have sold the Bitcoin long before it was as valuable as it is today like almost everyone that's had Bitcoin over the years.

  • You should put files on the cloud that meet the two following criteria:

    1. Valuable to you
    2. Not valuable to other people

This could include your hobbyist cad drawings, your twilight fan fic, or anything else that you need or don't want to lose but has very little value to bad actors.

  • Is cloud storage a new concept to you? Have you not heard of iCloud or Google drive? Cloud backups make a lot of sense for a lot of people. Just don't put sensitive information on there.

  • Machine learning is AI. I think the term you're looking for is general artificial intelligence, and no one is claiming LLMs fall under that label.

  • Mushrooms are the fruiting bodies of fungii. Yeast is also a fungus, but it does not produce mushrooms and calling it a mushroom is not accurate.

  • It does kind of work though. It's prefacing the meme by telling the reader to imagine that the text represents their point of view.

  • The thing is, if he had access to his hard drive at any point in the last 10 years or so he would have sold his Bitcoin long before it was this valuable, like many, many other people who used to own Bitcoin and aren't currently millionaires. The fact that he lost his hard drive is the only reason it's actually worth anything.

  • Why? They're providing a service with that contract. NASA isn't capable or doesn't want to do everything in house. If they deem it beneficial to outsource some projects to contractors then what's wrong with that?

  • Absolutely if private entities want to go to space they should be able to. What grounds would you block them on? This is not a substitution or replacement of public space agencies

  • I've driven through Oregon before back when you weren't allowed to pump your own gas and it felt ridiculous and inconvenient waiting for an employee to come pump gas for you. But maybe that's just because I'm accustomed to self serve.

For groceries it's nice to have the option to do self checkout. If I have a small number of items then self checkout is faster/easier. If I have a large number of items then going through the line with the cashier is faster/easier.
