It is easy for government or states to not have empathy because they are this big omnipresent, almighty entity that isn't responsible for anything (it is responsible but nothing will happen because it won't punish itself so you can blame it but it's pointless), rarely the public officers are responsible, they cover one another, it is easy to cancel helping programs and easier to create barriers. And then you find yourself in this group of people that isn't responsible for anything, but for common individuals it's easy to be nice, easier than being an asshole.
Still you are forcing those upon yourself (you can eat outside, order food, use disposable plates, etc). I don't even consider things like cleaning and washing a problem though.
Stuff like bills in countries like mine you have to pay for them because it's illegal to live outside the grid. Email is also not necessary, me having over a dozen emails is some self-inflicted pain, me using whatsapp because that's what family and friends use is some external inflicted pain but I could choose not to use it.
USA isn't annexing Venezuela and China won't take Taiwan because all they will take is a burning rock. Taiwan may not stop the invasion like Ukraine did but they are willing to die trying like Ukrainians are, and their factories are rigged with explosives.

Another reason why there are so many different interpretations it's translations and removing books for reasons. Never understood how someone decided in the last 5 centuries that a book isn't the word of God and hence should be removed.

To selfhost you first need to know what you want to do, do you want your own vpn service? your website? home assistant? then you decide what you need to host it and start building from that.
