I had to share a room with my mother... there was a door to the bathroom, but "the wall" separating the bed from the douche shower was frosted glass (i'm not sure if this is the right word. It allowed to see shadows through it... is grinded glass better?).
Maybe you had a bad experience with trains on your area, but I move equally fast on train than in car (taking account waiting the train and fighting for a parking space) for long distances... for my daily routine i waist a little more of time xause i have to walk 1 km from the station.
About the price... yep, the car is cheaper once you paid the initial investment.
I pay around 240 us$ anually to move to work by train (4 km).
On a car (diesel, local prices, 6,5 L/100 Km consumption) i would be paying 147 US$ just on gas. On that i have to add fees, taxes, repairment and parking..
I feared you would live in one of those highly populated cities in which extremely small and weirdly shaped lots are pretty common. Like, how do you build a house in a 4x10 m lot?
Anyway, thats the good thing with houses, you can always go up or sides... I mean it isn't cheap, but you are the owner of your lot.
On a sidenote, i always wanted to have a big garage that i could also use as a workshop. They aren't common in my country. If it helps in anyway, i like your plan and attitude.
I know, it happens to all of us... but I think that the label left by the deleted comment fitted the topic
