  • Probably bay leaves. I make a lot of stock at home. I find you can't really taste bay directly but you notice if it's not there.

I also use a lot of cumin, coriander, and oregano. Various chili powders. Anchor powder is very nice and not too spicy.

Buying a nice mortar and pestle set was one of my best kitchen investments. Fresh ground spices are a game changer.

  • The same Pierre Poilievre who was just glad-handing with Rob Primo? The same Rob Primo who's been hanging out with Jeremy MacKenzie? The same Jeremy MacKenzie who publicly threatened to rape Anaida Poilievre? That Pierre Poilievre?

  • "We should climb up the elephant's ass."

  • There was a cell at the site but we mostly just pretended to lock tourists in it for pictures.

  • When I worked at a historic site that flew the Union Flag, you had to run around the parade square three times if you screwed up while raising or lowering it. That included hanging it upside down or letting it hit the ground.

  • Double Uterus / Double Vagina is a thing but it's congenital and pretty rare. The uterus starts off as two ducts that eventually fuse into a single organ during fetal development. Sometimes they don't fuse completely, leading to two uteruses and sometimes two vaginas.

  • Scratching is part claw maintenance and part territorial marking / decorating. And it feels good for them! If you catch a cat scratching the furniture, scolding them will usually get them to stop. Most cats will quit scratching the furniture entirely if you give them more appealing things to scratch. It has to be a good height, very stable, and have a texture they like.

  • Long before my time, my WW2 veteran grandfather checked himself into the psych ward at the local hospital, spent several weeks there, then discharged himself voluntarily and never spoke of it again. The mental health stigma was real.

  • An American politician joking about annexing Canada isn't something we would ever find funny, no matter how it was timed. I don't think you understand quite how seriously Canadians take American threats to our sovereignty, joking or otherwise.

  • That's Jean Valjean's prisoner number from Les Miserables. He was imprisoned for stealing bread.

  • There used to be a show called Street Cents on CBC that focused on consumer and media awareness. On one episode, they torture tested Nalgene bottles.

It's been a while but if I'm remembering right, I watched them survive:

    • being thrown off a building
    • being run over by a bulldozer
    • being dipped in liquid nitrogen and hit with a hammer
    • being heated with a blow torch

The lids broke in some of the tests, especially if they had liquid in them, but the bottles themselves are basically indestructible.

I've seen a knock-off bottle break when somebody set a backpack down on it too hard.

  • I uninstalled Duolingo the day they started offering to restore your streak for money.

  • I live about 100km from my hometown. It's where I was born and I lived there on and off for about half my life but I no longer think of it as home.

  • There are two kinds of people who own a pressure canner - people who enjoy making preserves and fucking crazy people.

  • That's the kind of password an idiot would have on his luggage!

  • Needed something distinctly Canadian and probably only identifiable by other Canadians.
