Hi, I'm also Terencio on mastodon.social and Sergio on lemmy.world.

  • Overton window for devils.

  • This question deserves wider discussion, Ima make a post.

  • Yeah I think a lot of bands don't want to be labeled "goth" bc there's not a huge music fanbase that seeks out goth music, so you have to call yourself post-punk or something. Even if you don't care about "huge" fame and just want enough of a fanbase to play concert tours. It might be different in Europe, dunno.

  • "Sure, you could meet people the old-fashioned way by going outside, but that feels like a lot of work. So instead you navigate this bleak dystopian hellscape sifting through the dregs of humanity through your smartphone while each day brings you closer to the cold hard hands of death."

  • There it is. Their chatbots need more training data and reinforcement feedback.

  • Fam if you need to use reddit don't feel bad about it. "The trick is not to ignore the mainstream, but to selectively raid it for things we can use." -M. Gunderloy

  • That's so awesome when the DJ plays the deep cuts, it's like: you're the DJ, you tell me what I need to hear!

  • Oh wow this brings back memories....

  • see !unix_surrealism@lemmy.sdf.org , one of the best things on the fediverse.

there was a really nice overview which has since been removed. let's see oh, it was just moved here: https://analognowhere.com/wiki/analognowhere/

    In not too distant future...TECHNO-MAGE

In not too distant future, in a universe not too dissimilar to ours, the world is barren. Vast sprawls of arid deserts and inhospitable jungles cover the face of the planet, while the majority of its denizens persist in gigantic walled-off metacities, governed by the omnipresent gov-corporation. These cities are home to many beings living under the tyranical regimes of their watchful overlords. This is the age of technocrats, transhumanists and digisophers, all slaves to meticuously crafted closed hardware, deceptive software and cyber practices designed to enthrall all who wish to persist on this new frontier of the future.

Most have forgotten the days of old. Times of revered hackers, prophets of digital freedom, cults of the spirits of the machine and of free people are now distant memories turned into myth. The buried trenches, where great warriors once fought the abominable corporate monsters, and looted museums of open technology are to those few who still remember but a sickly reminder of a great cause that was lost.

But while the large cities are host to most, the outside is not without life. Many sought refuge in the vast wastes of the Wild, escaping from the cybernetic hell the gov-corporation had in store for all. These remnants of the free people now inhabit small towns and communes, built from the rubble of previous generations, gathering old knowledge and obsolete technology they sparsely understand.

In this world, where all but few have forgotten the language of the free machine, enigmatic TECHNO-MAGES roam the desecrated planet. Hunted and persecuted by the restless gov-corporation, but loved by the fleeting population of the people of the Wild. Teachers of forbidden knowledge. Last warriors of freedom.

In a small settlement of an old Wild tribe a child is summoned by its elder and sent on a quest to seek out the mythical Fish in order to become its student. This is a story of that child in the world of Analog Nowhere.

  • Badass. I was reading up on them and here's an interesting detail that's obvious but I hadn't thought of:

There are a lot of technical changes since the 90s. In those days we would write in the studio and whatever came out at the end, we released! That was because you couldn’t take the mix down from the desk without losing the whole sound. These days, with digital, it’s easier to go back to a mix.

  • There are a couple abilities involved:

    • knowing something
    • modeling a learner: understanding someone else's current level of knowledge and the nature of their lack of knowledge such as misconceptions.
    • instruction skill: having the ability to remedy the learner's misconceptions and build upon their existing knowledge to transmit the knowledge/skill

The last two are nontrivial. You ever told someone the answer to something and they just didn't get it? Even though it was stunningly obvious to you? The last two are why.

Anyway, to your point: a lot of times the best action is just to point someone in the right direction.

  • ikr sounds like that thing where Socrates' wisdom was realizing that he was not wise.

Socrates then sought to solve the divine paradox—how an ignorant man also could be the wisest of all men—in effort to illuminate the meaning of the Oracles' categorical statement that he is the wisest man in the land. After systematically interrogating the politicians, the poets, and the craftsmen, Socrates determined that the politicians were not wise like he was. He says of himself, in reference to a politician: "I am wiser than this man; it is likely that neither of us knows anything worthwhile, but he thinks he knows something when he does not."(21d).[15] Socrates says that the poets did not understand their poetry; that the prophets and seers did not understand what they said; and that the craftsmen while knowing many things, thought they also had much knowledge on things of which they had none.

  • Wat? So the pizzacake artist didn't do this? TO HELL WITH HER! no, wait, I think I saw an anti-Trump comic from her elsewhere... unless that was also an edit? How are we supposed to tell? Fam, the post-truth era is so fucking complicated. I have seen the best memes of my generation changed from TIFUs into greentexts dragged hilarously edited through the modlog screens at dawn...

  • AI music, no thanks.

Well, turning a knob to change the tone or a beat being generated, that's OK. Turning a virtual knob, OK too. Providing some words and getting a tone or beat, that might be cool, depends how it's trained and implemented. That's the kind of thing I was hoping for when I checked out the suno music generator. But no, it was just: give it a couple words as a prompt and it'd generate an entire song, including lyrics and cover art. Seriously, you could just say "rock song about owls" and it'd give you three songs to choose from. If you provided lyrics and/or described a genre it'd make the music match them as best it could. And it all sounded realistic enough, but yeah, just very cliche.

  • I too bear a grudge against the pizzacake artist, for backing Reddit during the API protests. But it's one of those "find allies wherever you can" sorta situations.
