    That's a strange comment given that Ukraine will need significantly more than $500 billion for the reconstruction and damage repair alone (as per the latest available data from Feb 2025).

    Freeland already serves as Canada's special representative for the reconstruction of Ukraine.

  • Canada shoudn't want any mining by foreign entities, no matter what country, because in the end there is always a very real threat of exploitation for the benefit of foreign interests at the expense of Canada. Such 'annexation' comes not necessarily by military force, but can also come by political or economic coercion due to dependence on foreign entities or states.

    The US has shown that to Canada already of late. China has been doing that to its 'partner' countries all around the globe. Then think of Russia, the former Soviet Union. And all the others now and in history.

    These rare earths and supposedly a lot of other things should become sort of a common good. I don't have blueprint how to organize that for Canada as it's very complicated, but it should be public ownership by stakeholders within Canada imo.

  • With annual defense spending set to more than double by 2035, investors say they’re turning bullish on a sector that has historically flown under the radar.

    Given the changing security landscape and Canadian defense investments flew under the radar, it comes with no surprise that the industry is now bullish on the sector I would say.

    Other countries' military spending has been bullish for a long time. China, for example, has been heavily investing in its military complex for 30 years. In Russia, the defense minister is an economist which apparently means that the Kremlin is not up to stop its war games anytime soon.

    It would certainly be better if the world spent money for something else than weapons, but the problem here is not Canada. It comes from threats brought about by foreign malign actors.

  • Yeah, the China propaganda is widespread, but possibly by users with several alt accounts (if I get your point right). I am quite new here on Lemmy, still learning.

    Maybe it's just me but I feel there are not many discussions on any topic, it's more a link builder. But maybe I am mistaken.

    • China as a more reliable trade partner for Canada over the U.S., even as favourability remains low
    • More Canadians (45%) say they would ideally have Canada do less trade with China than say it’s as a good a trade partner as any (37%).
    • One-in-five (21%) say Canada could completely make up economic losses from forgoing this relationship, while three-in-five (60%) believe Canada could trade less with China with minimal economic consequence.
    • Three-in-five (61%) describe China’s prominence as an economic power as a “threat to Canadian interests."
    • Half of Canadians (53%) say that despite the risk of damage it may do to their country’s relationship with China, they would still pursue a closer relationship with Taiwan.

    And across the Lemmyverse there are many supporting China and Russia, including both countries' warfare and aggression. I just read here on Lemmy about a study about Lemmygrad/.ml and the so-called "tankies" which says,

    Our results show that users of Lemmygrad/.ml frequently share posts that support authoritarian regimes, as seen in their support for China, North Korea, and Russia. Moreover, their support can extend beyond backing these authoritarian regimes, even cheering on their violent actions, as evidenced by their posts on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Additionally, we observe anti-Zionist and antisemitic behaviors, which show similarities to right-wing extremism (Zannettou et al. 2020). Our analysis suggests a concerning endorsement of authoritarian actions and extremist rhetoric on Lemmygrad/.ml, further indicating that left-wing extremist communities on decentralized platforms should receive more attention from the academic community.

    Views of China may be warmer amid tensions with the U.S., but that does not mean it is a reliable partner. It's a dictatorship with no real allies.

    Cai Qi [now the second most powerful man in China after Xi Jinping] made famous a term, “low-end population” (低端人口), and exposed CCP’s contempt of rural migrants it treats as second class citizens.

    And this is not the only devastating fact about China in this testimony.

    Canada (and the rest of the democratic world) should be grateful that people like Mr. Liu speak out.

    And your communication doesn't show good faith to say the least. First, you question the source. When it's clear that it's a literal statement by a person, you question the person. What comes next?

    His place of living doesn't play a role and has nothing to do with the content. He is born in China and knows the country and its government, and he gave a damning testimony about China's trade policy and reliability.
