  • Janice Lester (portrayed by Sandra Smith) traded bodies with Kirk in an attempt to be captain in the season 3 finale "Turnabout Intruder".

But pictured in this post here is the Medusan ambassador's escort Miranda Jones (portrayed by Diana Muldaur) from "Is There in Truth No Beauty?"

Diana Muldaur later returned to the franchise to portray the role of Doctor Pulaski. It was not Sandra Smith/Janice Lester (Kirk's ex) who ended up also portraying a new character as you say. It was Diana Muldaur/Miranda Jones (the Medusan's escort).

  • Right, but what word does it actually stand for?

  • I would have to see that to believe it

  • This was definitely accurate at one point, but is not representive of reality today.

  • What modern software does not support it? Sometimes animated images are only rendered as a static image of the first frame of the animation, but it is fairly universally supported nowadays.

  • VLC on Android/Linux does not work at all. MPV on Android also does not, but it does work fine on Linux. Granted MPV does not automatically loop the animation, which probably isn't really an issue. I think MPV is a video player first and foremost, so it makes sense that it would treat animated images the same as it treats videos (i.e. not loop by default, and only do so if you have repeat mode set appropriately).

  • On Android, it is not rendering in Thunder or any of the various Firefox/Chromium forks that I have installed. When I tap on it, instead of displaying in-app, it just tries to download the file. When I open that local file in Simple Gallery, it displays as just a static image of the first frame of the animation (but doesn't actually actually play the animation). No other app that I have installed opens the file at all.

On Linux, I have the same experience with browsers just downloading the file instead of actually rendering it. Opening the local file in Gwenview does play back the full animation as expected.

  • Are you thinking Kirk's ex wife or whatever from the finale? That is a different character than this Medusan pictured here

  • Geordi Interchange Format

  • One is his name, and one is not.

  • That logic does make sense with the default layout of the left touchpad being used as the scroll wheel, considering that the element that is being scrolled (the screen) is on the right side of the element that is controlling the scrolling (the left touchpad). If someone were to swap the touchpads (so that the left controls the pointer and the right controls scrolling), they would probably also want to invert scroll direction if they want to follow that cogwheel logic.

  • The only problem that I have with that is when Y is inverted, but X is not. It's simple to wrap my head around "up actually means down", but to simultaneously have to think "left still means left" is confusing.

  • I have definitely seen similar confused comments saying "My touchpad is broken! It works correctly when touching the right side, but the left side always scrolls in opposite direction!" Then once it gets explained that it is using a circular gesture, it is immediately understood, and they might even end up preferring that.

  • My large hands would probably be fine with a 'nearly 7" behemoth' if phones would just go back to a 9:16 aspect ratio. I may even be able to appreciate a more ereader-like aspect ratio like 2:3, 3:4, or 4:5. I have just been fed up by the unnecessarily tall phones of the past decade.

  • That was a joke about root beer, but there were also root beer jokes earlier in season 3, "Facets"

  • Something similar to this concept is great for enterprise environments. Imagine an employee at home using a basic thin client that just connects to a "mainframe" of a server that exists on premises and is running an individual VM or whatever for each employee's thin client. That is already a widespread concept. But for a home PC, with that VM being run on the OS manufacturer's servers? No, I don't think anybody should want to pay for that.

  • Is that a typo, or is "Here me out" part of the joke?

  • Hundreds of upvotes on a shitpost can't be wrong!
