  • It's cool you got to try out plasma mobile! I haven't had the chance to try it myself, but I have been using phosh which works well too.

  • I appreciate this post. I think you are right that those of us who value privacy and try to take steps to minimize eventually having those moments of having to step back and reassess our threat model.

Every now and then I ask myself why I resist the duopoly of Apple and Google, and the answer is because I value a third option. Like you mentioned in your post it may seem bleak now, but it might not always be this way. And if we ever do reach a more privacy conscious society, it was because all of us in the privacy community kept the flame going by supporting and using that more privacy focused third option.

  • having spent time fighting fires is probably an amazing thing to have on a resume, and will probably open doors for them that were otherwise closed.

It certainly sounds good, but unfortunately many of them are not able to get careers as firefighters because the crime they were incarcerated for excludes them from getting hired. Democracy Now did a good story on it a few years ago: https://www.democracynow.org/2018/9/12/a_new_form_of_slavery_meet

It looks like it may have been updated too: https://www.democracynow.org/2025/1/14/california_wildfires_incarcerated_firefighters

  • That looks cool!

  • I certainly agree that reasonably there should be no need to go against humanity when resources are shared collectively and needs are met. However, humans don't always act in a reasonable way, not to mention sociopaths and psychopaths that may place short term gain ahead of long term stability.

  • The only way to try and get everyone to follow communism is through force, which requires a state, that is true. This is why I prefer anarcho-communism, where there is no state enforcing it.

It is also true under anarchism people have the option to not cooperate peacefully. As you said, humans are still humans at the end of the day and some will take advantage of others or hoard resources.

But I don't think that is reason enough to not at least try to get there. Because under capitalism those same issues still exist, only people are expected to be okay with losing their autonomy and giving up their resources for the sake of a wealthy ruling class.

  • I remember it for the same reason. Pretty cool that the project is still going

  • In Lemmy, and I would say in the Fediverse in general, the population skews left. That means there are more terms to describe the spectrum. Mainstream media and social media label anyone centrist and towards the left as liberals. And of course the Far Right labels the same people as socialists scum.

My rubric for here in the fediverse is as follows. Liberals are generally referred to as capitalists and/or believe capitalism is still the best economic system that only needs minor reforms, along with social justice reforms. Tankies are generally the ones that want to enforce the social and economic reforms with an iron fist, even against the populace at large if necessary. Leftists are generally anarcho-something (socialist/communist), and believe major change is needed beyond the system we have in place now.

Again, that’s my rubric, and I’m sure other people have their own.

  • The best way to fight is to prevent it from happening in the first place. I would recommend carrying an air horn or whistle and use the noise to scare it off.

  • I guess it's less the services and more the updated hardware that tempts me. I don't do anything that requires a lot of computing power, so I get tempted to get something with Samsung Dex or Motorola Ready For to use it as both mobile and laptop/desktop.

I do use the Librem 5 with convergence, but storage is becoming an issue. I have a few things I can try to maximize storage before seriously considering something else.

  • I have significantly reduced my usage of Google and Apple services for a couple of years now. Sometimes I wonder if I should go back, but then I see the enshitification of it all and it reminds me why I did so in the first place.

  • It is peak capitalism, but not really the fault of the OP or anyone that shops on Amazon. Under capitalism there is no ethical consumption because by default the workers are being screwed over. Not only that, but capitalism incentivizes monopoly and that's exactly what Amazon accomplished in the online retail market.

  • Thanks for the tips! I used to ride motorcycles so I believe wholeheartedly in investing in the right gear and equipment for a safe ride. I will make sure to do the same when I get an ebike.

  • That's really sad to hear. I've been saving up for an e-bike to use for commuting and nearby transportation. I guess all we can do is wear helmets, high viz gear, and hope for the best. Stay safe out there!

  • I complained to the manager about not having a safe space and demanded the smokers be evicted. I caused a huge scene and they called security. I went limp so that they had to drag me out of the casino. I have returned everyday holding a picket sign with a picture of a cigarette crossed out in red ink. I will continue to do so until their smoking policy changes.

    /s, obviously

  • Las Vegas and Reno casinos are still like that. I don't go often, but the few times that I have I gave up any of my mild interest to gamble when I realized how much smoke there was indoors.
