  • Alsup allegedly failed to conduct a "rigorous analysis" of the potential class and instead based his judgment on his "50 years" of experience, Anthropic said.

The judge didn’t apply critical thinking but instead just did whatever was the most likely decision based on all the information it was fed in its training? That must be very inconvenient and it would be a shame if we had companies advertising exactly that as a world changing technology.

    1. Apps like GIMP and Darktable DON'T auto-update, though apps like Latest will detect that new versions are available. Normally, this means I have to go to the application's website and download the new version myself. Will Homebrew automatically update these programs?

Yes, Homebrew will upgrade anything except software that is defined as auto-updating.

    1. Further, for the apps that do get auto-updated, do they remain in my Homebrew catalog and all to where I'd be able to remove or configure them with brew commands?

Yes, it’s just that the version information for brew will not be accurate.

    1. Regarding apps that DON'T have built-in updaters like GIMP and the like, if I go to the developer's website and get the newest versions, do I have to do anything with the originals installed via Homebrew CLI or app wrappers like Applite?

Obviously you don’t have to uninstall the old version. It’s just a bit inconvenient if spotlight search for GIMP brings up two apps where one is outdated. But brew doesn’t care.

  • But mint wouldn’t be possible without the work that the Ubuntu community puts into making a stable and polished distribution. And Ubuntu wouldn’t be possible without the Debian community who put in the effort to make the distribution the best for their usage.

    • Just plain not available in Homebrew (very few)
    • Available but depreciated or otherwise unable to be installed (few)

These are easy to check on https://formulae.brew.sh/

    • Installs but doesn’t allow checking for updates (all others, though this might just be because they update through Homebrew)

If a GUI tool can auto update, Homebrew leaves it to auto update and actually stops updating the tool.

  • Without knowing what “fails” means it’s gonna be incredibly difficult to say something useful about specific apps. But where the fault is it’s easy to decipher. Does it work in the CLI without applite? Then it’s clearly an applite issue.

  • Why would anyone eat scientists?

  • It was already a pretty attractive target because of servers for everything. I’m not sure reaching 5% desktop market share will really make it more attractive for malware.

  • Af an attack can escape a container a lot of companies worldwide are going to need to patch a 0-day. I do not expect that to be part of my threat model for self-hosted services.

  • If “intelligence agency caught lying” is all that’s needed to make it onion-y it would be a lot busier here.

For satire I’d expect something like “CIA accidentally publishes message thanking Lee Harvey Oswald for his service”

  • How is this oniony?

  • How on-point for the propaganda machine of the Russian government.

  • How do you reckon that? The companies themselves are trying to reopen coal plants and xAI is burning natural gas to get the energy for training. Those things have a proven impact on the climate.

  • I’m not the developer, but I do also write app backends for a living so I know there is some nuance that you’re skipping over in your response. But if you have a way to do this completely anonymous on android I’d suggest offering help to the developer who made this.

Something that... links it to the device? Like, a unique ID that Apple can identify?

APNS tokens are linked to the app install and renew on a certain timeline. Already making them not exactly the same as a device identifier.

  • Apple notification identifiers are unique to an app install and regularly change though, so it’s hardly a device identifier.

  • Thanks, but I’m not the developer of the app so that’s not really relevant for me.
