  • I think you may be confused. Americans tell the international community who represents them as a whole, as most countries do. In this case America picked Trump. They picked him using the method they created. They enforce their pick with the institutions they created. How self-absorbed and entitled do you need to be to call someone bigoted because they don't have the time / inclanation / patience / stomach to then make their own arbitrary decision on each individual in your shithole country?

Maybe, if Americans weren't such feckless, lazy, cowards you wouldn't be in this situation. But no, the American way is to blameshift, like their Leader does. Like you do here: unless their is 100% internal consensus in your electoral process you expect the rest of us to distinguish between each of you. And those who don't are bigots. Not your fault, is it... we are just bigots to you.

Do they still teach critical thinking in America, or is it just Pledges of Allegiance to Dear Leader now?

Maybe stop posting and go do something about it? One has to have their fat American neck buried pretty deep to not know how to help nowadays. Find people in your area already doing something and go ask them what needs doing. Or, as I expect, post about how it's not your fault and how you can't do anything. In 5... 4... 3...

"Home of the brave." Ha ha fucking ha.

  • As we all know, a person defines themselves through their actions. So does a country.

Imho, saying Trump(ism) isn't America is like people who do evil, but still think they are good people. Admitting you have a problem is the first step in getting better. You need to hate what America has become. Shifting the blame to the current administration just lets people feel good about themselves. They shouldn't. There is work to do.

The second step is meeting up with others in your community already working to fix it.

  • Damn.

She should leave Gilead and join us up here in Canada. Staple the news article to her immigration paperwork. It's a badge of honour. How can you all have pride in a country that does this shit? Stay safe down there!

  • Maybe search a little more broadly then in the United States. I can't convince you, but America is not some unique civilization that transcends human nature.

Likewise, the purpose of protesting isn't to simply change the minds of the electorate and make them more invested. It is far more nuanced and powerful then that. I'm tempted tomlist some ways it helps, but I recognize that one can always justify their inaction.

The first step is to take a leap of faith; get connected with the growing number of Americans who are bravely and nonvoilently standing against this tyranny. Protesting is just one part of the puzzle. Maybe there is another you feel empowered to do.

    Good luck.

  • The protests matter.

History shows us how and why. It also shows us that thinking they don't matter is pretty common. If even 10% of Americans showed up to protest you would see instant, dramatic changes the next day. And it tends to snowball. Americans are not as powerless between elections as they have convinced themselves they are.

I think that deep down they know all this, but it's easier to claim it won't matter.

To better protect myself from cognitive biases I try to put my faith in the consensus of the experts. Otherwise we all just waste time cycling through old, ego-fueled debates that have been fully explored before we were even born.

In the case of protesting: the overwhelming consensus is that protests matter. If you don't have the time/inclanation to defend a disertation as to why they don't: you should listen to those that have. Unfortunately the experts don't have the resources to play whack-a-mole with every objection any person can claim on any platform. If you want that you need to go to school. Until then trust and protest. The longer you wait the harder it will be.

  • Spoken like a true American.

It sounds like you've completely exhausted all options. Anyone can see you have taken your civic duty to defend American FREEDOM seriously. No one has done any more than you have. History will record your deeds and future generations will say, "He voted, protested, and talked to his family. We owe him the FREEDOM we have today." Statues will be erected. Schools will be renamed. You are remarkable. I'm honoured to be in the presence of such a great person.

    Although...

Reading these "History Books" it seems that some of your ancestors did find a few more things they could do. I understand if you haven't read "History Books" as they've probably been burned in your country. Sad.

  • Now say please... good girl. Now thank Daddy... that's right.

  • Unfortunately Americans are convinced they can't do anything about it, so they don't.

  • I'm not defining terms; I'm repeating how the terms are defined. You can look it up in any dictionary. After that, if you still feel like arguing about it I'm not your opponent. You can contact Mrs. Mirriam-Webster, or Mr. Oxford, etc. Please post the exchange! Maybe the argument, "That's not how it works," will convince them.

  • generation (noun): "the living things which share a common ancestry and are alive at (or about) the same time."

The word does not refer solely to humans. It existed before the habit of neatly labeling people born within an arbitrary range of years. For example, medical researchers will record changes in microbes from generation to generation (without making up names for each generation).

So, if our generation (the people alive today, or any time in the next ~9 months) agreed to not have children then humanity's climate crisis would be solved. In fact, every human problem would be solved. Think about it.

  • 100% of scientists agree that not-having-kids will solve our climate change crisis in one generation.

  • Won't happen. If Trump attempts this type of malpractice he will pay the price politically and legally. We are well protected from these mafia-like politicians who enrich themselves at our expen... Oh wait. nvm. Wrong timeline.

  • We would completely solve the climate crisis in one generation if we all stopped having kids.

  • Yes. I have it set up this way. I forgot it wasn't the default. For the amount of headache it would solve, I wonder if the Arch team has a specific reason for not keeping a number of previous kernels by default.

  • I haven't used Windows since Win7 - Is it possible nowadays to immediately cancel a kernel-level upgrade (say, Win7 to Win8) and have it gracefully stop and then boot into the pre-upgrade environment? If so, then Windows has come a long way. We use to be careful breathing-too-loudly around Windows computers during the upgrade process. Microsoft must be getting better.

  • Out of curiosity: Which operating system(s) can you shutdown while the kernel is being overwritten? I wouldn't imagine that as a limitation of Arch Linux specifically.

  • Unpopular Opinion:

I think Tucker Carlson is a piece-of shit and a coward. That said, there is no contadiction in someone hating the bravest person they know.

  • We have to hold people accountable for their governments in spite of the empathy we feel about their struggle.
