A peace loving silly coffee-fueled humanoid carbon-based lifeform that likes #cinema #photography #linux #zxspectrum #retrogaming

  • Mark it as an achievement on your learning path and move on. We all did something silly like that at some point.

Great that you have backups, get a fresh install and restore it.

Lessons learned: don't work as root unless you absolutely positively have a good reason to do so.

  • Maybe it's time you invested some time in finding alternatives that let you stay in control of said hardware. I know time is in short supply for all of us, so consider your priorities.

  • You will find unhelpful people in any group of people. Linux community is not special in that regard.

  • Boring flat dark design interfaces.

I miss the CDE colour scheme. The BeOS funky 3D icons. Buttons that look like buttons. Tabs that look like tabs. Now everything is just flat, bland and monochromatic. It's sad.

  • This. You have to load a whole ******* web renderer context so that developers can more easily add "features" like emojis and animated gifs to a ******* mail client. Same thing with Teams.

It's all so woefully wasteful, slow, painful. But it's OK, we now have loads of RAM, fast SSDs, multi-core multi-thread ultra-fast CPUs anyway, and gifs really are a must-have in modern corporate communication.

Just get out of my lawn.

  • Now that you put it like that, I think what puts me off is all the melee and glory kills. Not my cup of tea. I need my social distancing from hellspawn. That, and the puny amounts of ammo. When I play a boomer shooter, I want to shoot. If I wanted melee, I'd play Mortal Kombat or something.

  • Manjaro seems to be a word that gets you down voted pretty quickly.

I've been using it for years with few issues, but then I'm not using AUR.

I also use EndeavorOS, Xubuntu, Debian in other machines. One thing that annoys me about EndeavorOS is that using a graphical package manager is not recommended but I've grown to like using those.

  • I can confirm those numbers, I once was touching the terminal when a call came through. Shocking experience, would not recommend.

  • Different tastes.

The simplicity, artwork and playability appeals to me.

  • Finally installed Doom 2016. It's nice, but the gameplay is not clicking with me.

  • I've sunk nearly 800 hours on it.

    Good luck.

  • Thanks for the warning.

I have the original Talos plus the DLC and love it but I'll wait some years until I have the iron to run the remaster.

  • I never uninstall it, in fact I have several copies: Steam, GOG...

  • I guess so.

The first two (mainly the first) had that special something you get in indie games.

  • Torchlight and Torchlight 2 are great games and even have mods available.

I hear 3 and Infinite are not, though.

  • Let me count the ways:

    • Edited /etc/sudoers with vi instead of visudo.
    • The classic rm -fr /
    • The typical chown myuser: / -R
    • Removed the bootloader dunno why
    • Some shenanigans involving dd and the wrong device

I could go on, but my memory tends to erase the painful memories.

  • I've been online since the time my modern had to scream at my phone line and this is the first time I encountered that particular TLA.

  • It depends on which distro you're using, but most have Asunder packaged, and you can use Picard as a Flatpak if you can't find it natively packaged, IIRC.
