  • Note that this may occasionally interfere with things. I was having trouble with in-flight WiFi last time I flew, and I once I switched the Private DNS setting back to Automatic, it suddenly worked.

  • Which server did you join? I've been following lots of hashtags (including cats), so my feed there is pretty active. Just hoping some IRL friends and family will join soon so I have those sort of accounts to follow and share with.

  • If you can get ahold of it, yes, very cheap. The problem is that a little goes a very long way, so it's not so easy to get a hold of anymore, at least in the US.

    It was probably 10 years ago that I discovered that I could buy a 500g bag of pure caffeine powder for about $20, plus a milligram scale for another $20. I was drinking quite a bit of sugar free Red Bull at the time, and had been ordering them by the case ($50ish?) to save a little money, so it was a no brainer for me to switch to caffeine powder. Break even point was maybe 2 weeks worth of caffeinated beverages.

    The bad news is a few people OD'd on caffeine powder around that time (completely unrelated to me), so it was pretty much banned. The good news is that 500g is a fucking shit load of caffeine. I often get my caffeine from more traditional sources now (coffee, tea), so that bag may end up lasting me the rest of my life.

    For some additional context, a 250mL (8.4 oz) can of Red Bull contains 80mg caffeine, while a 1/16 teaspoon (~0.3mL) scoop of pure caffeine powder is about 200mg. That works out to less than 0.5¢ ($0.005) of caffeine per Red Bull, and I'm not even getting wholesale pricing.

  • I'm a woman who has mostly dated men, and I'm firmly in the "no pen pals" camp. Without body language, tone of voice, etc., there's a lot of missing information that my brain fills in. I find that the more I text with someone before meeting face to face, the more likely I am to feel disappointed when we finally meet because they don't live up to the image conjured up in my brain. If we've both expressed mutual interest on the app, my preferrence is to go straight to planning a low stakes in person meetup.

  • Take it one step further though. The fine shouldn't be calculated per customer, but per piece of data. So name, phone number, and address would be 3 pieces, and every GPS data point is another piece.

  • If the product you're ordering is eligible for free returns, I would place a second order, then return the second one once it arrives.

I was not in a position to elaborate at the moment, so I really do appreciate someone else elaborting & providing additional perspectives, and while we may not necessarily see eye to eye, I think you've pointed out some differences (in a relatively neutral way) that are important for users to be aware of when they navigate the various instances.

    While I'm posting from .world, this was never intended as my "primary" account. My "primary" account was on kbin, and now that I've accepted that kbin isn't coming back, I've been wanting to move somewhere else for my main account, but life + ADHD + too many choices has been getting in the way of that, and many other things I need to do. I hate signing up for things, so I'm hoping my next instance will be a good fit for me for a good while.

  • Thanks! In terms of fostering, my primary concern is cat to cat, although I probably should worry about cat to human also. My resident cats are otherwise healthy and I keep them up to date on their vaccinations, but at least so far, it doesn't sound like that's good enough.

    The researchers next housed uninfected ferrets in cages next to infected ones to test whether the virus could spread through the air via respiratory droplets. They performed four separate experiments using ferrets infected with varying doses of the virus. Between 1 in 6 and 1 in 3 infected ferrets transmitted the virus to uninfected neighbors. Five of the six ferrets who became infected in this way died.

    In my case, they would effectively be housed in separate cages (rooms of my home) for an initial quarantine period, but I would be going back and forth between those rooms without changing my clothes.

  • This is likely airborne, huh? Any idea what the incubation period is for cats? I'm seeing mixed information, but read that symptoms seem to progress very quickly. My cats are indoor only, but we usually have some fosters around, and I'm worried that we may need to put that on pause.

    I've never heard that word before! Looking it up, I see that my family has essentially been having an annual tamalada for probably close to 10 years now. Grandma used to make them all on her own, and since she doesn't have anything written down, it's been a joint effort to make sure the recipe lives on. The family recipe is central American, so they're a bit different than Mexican tamales, but I do enjoy both!

    I also did a side project last year to make vegan masa for the few vegan/kosher guests we have, and then I usually do a second traditional batch when I'm back home so I can practice, make notes, and have some to share with my local friends. It's definitely a lot of work, usually a 2-3 day project, but it does get easier with practice, and 1-3 assistants.

  • My main reasoning is that I just wanted to try making it from scratch at least once, just for the experience. A secondary reason is that I guess I'm technically looking for "manteca de puerco", which has more pork flavor than the shelf stable lard available at the closest grocery stores, so I have to make a special trip to get the right stuff anyway, and I'm just exploring my options as to how to get a hold of the necessary ingredients.

    Where I grew up, there's multiple huge Mexican grocery stores, so it's easy to get exactly what I need in one stop, but where I live now, I have to go to multiple stores to get everything, and still have to make do with some minor substitutions (eg. frozen banana leaves instead of fresh).
