  • Tbf a decent amount of "american food" is prepared by intuition rather than by formula

If you're checking measurements for a burger, it's for the individual stacked items you're putting together on the burger and not usually for how much ground meat you need to get off a chuck steak for the burger you want.

I only write down measurements in my own recipes because I'm chronically paranoid I'll fuck everything up since so much of my stuff is already mishmash of previous recipes (just finished putting together a non dairy Knaffeh recipe so my SO can have it in spite of their allergies, had to figure out how to mimic Arrakawi cheese using fake mozz lol XD)

  • Mine is that the most rabidly anti metric folks stateside are likely to be weapons enthusiasts who measure ammo calibur in metric.

  • That depends more on the setting, IDK about professional kitchens but most home cooking I've seen measures in imperial.

  • Oh yeah, because constantly forcing a change it's obvious nobody you're trying to force it on cares about is definitely making things easier for them.

  • I mean there's really only four ways people use imperial over metric

For cooking, For weighing themselves, For measuring distances, For measuring temperature.

For most other purposes, especially where scientific accuracy is called for, Americans are perfectly aware of and capable of using metric, and mostly do so.

Metric pushing at this point is basically bashing non academics for continuing to use a colloquial measurement that serves them just fine for what they actually need to measure and visualize on a daily basis.

  • Yeah but with the 7 day week you only have 1 or two intercalaries to figure out

6 day weeks leave you with five or six, and having almost a week on average of extra days to make work feels like too much of a nuisance just to be able to keep a unit of measure that doesn't really serve any actual specificity that you can't get with the Q-W-D format date.

  • My ideal is dropping the month altogether for 13 week Quarters with the last day being an intercalary outside the week and same for leap days.

If you wanna avoid huge date numbers, break it down further by weeks, so for example my BDay this year would be 3.10.3, third day of the tenth week of the third quarter.

As for year counting, I like Era of History for the current era, dating to the invention of writing, Era of Legend, dating back 100k years to the earliest date that stories we have preserved now would have to date back to, Era of Evolution, which dates back to the development of Life on Earth, Era of Stars which dates back to the birth of the first Stars in the Universe, and finally the Era of Energy, in which the universe was so superheated that large cosmic structures were physically impossible, dating to the Big Bang.

    Today's Date is 3.8.1; 5,224 EoH

  • Pish posh, I'm a software engineer, we're basically the exact same thing! Inscrutable incantations that we don't know how exactly it makes the machine do what we need it to and all!

  • You just admitted you knew about them and talked about them.

    We're going out together brother!

  • How about just classify data by the minimum security requirements you need to meet to hold a license to collect it?

  • I make them laugh and giggle a lot, it's the cutest crushy giggle you'd have ever heard

  • If you're genuinely serious, a beginner's server box and some CLI training will usually be enough for your average person's storage needs, especially with a proper personal VPN connection.

Only people who need entire racks are those aforementioned gurus because they're working with whole computer images which can be hundreds if not thousands of gigs, and people who are trying to torrent all of known visual media in human history to create a personal free streaming service, which will almost definitely land you in a court room courtesy of your ISP ratting you out to the authorities.

  • Would you believe me if I told you my ability to tangent into subjects I know someone is interested in is part of how I got into it with my current SO?

  • We've already seen what Ukraine will do in response to a confirmed sighting in Mali.

Venezuela is about to see a plot straight out of Operation Nemesis play out.

  • I mean if you've met some of the old boy shot callers who work with or for the CIA, yeah no they could totally pull the disguise with a wardrobe change and some fake sunburn makeup.

Most of the actual work that goes on there is data analysis, and that means tech workers, and that means the saged guru tech workers who live out of a single family home that's less expensive than their home lab, their backup servers, their backup backup servers in a compound in montana, the backup backup backup servers in a bunker in New Zealand, and the thoroughbred they got for their horse girl daughter because these guys are usually also complete suckers for their kids or even younger siblings if there's a wide enough age gap, as I found out that one such guru was technically the half brother of this girl I had AP microeconomics with.

  • If you're a 40k fan familiar with the theory that the 2nd and 11th legions had their marines glommed into the Fists and Blueberries...

    ...that.

  • Brazilians see this map and start tossing conspiracy theories about how fossil fuel cuts are a UN plot to seize the Sahara

Also is it me or do these borders look dangerously sensible for Africa?
