  • I don't think liberals are with leftists on this one though (or ever in practice, but that's for another time). Like they don't actually oppose regime change in Venezuela. They just hate Trump for breaking with liberal decorum. They'd support it as one of "his only good decisions" if he just followed the law. And liberals are certainly not learning from past events, i.e. for all practical purposes, liberals are functionally born yesterday but all the time.

  • Yeah, twice. Once for music production, once more for electrical engineering. Both times, I went to college so I could be formally certified in the skill that was taught. I can learn stuff all on my own (this is basically what my PhD will be), but it's nice to be able to point to a transcript (and the implied appeal to authority of the University 😆) and have a body of projects to show that I can do the work. And for electrical engineering, you typically need at least a bachelor's degree to get entry-level work beyond an internship.

    as a power plant operator, in my state a degree isn't needed, just licensing.

    I have been warned time and time again that getting a PhD is actually bad for my job prospects compared to stopping at a masters degree. Which is definitely true for industry jobs, but my interests are exclusively in original research, and the PhD is fully funded, so 🤷.

  • Yeah my comment is more about the procedure than the effect. Like I don't think there's gonna be an official proclamation like "Elections are hereby cancelled", they're just gonna come up with enough ways to "cancel" undesirable ballots that it'll be like the election never happened. I.e., more of what has been done before, but done harder. IMO, going this route would be harder for people to call out because it's systemic and "quiet", and USians have zero systems thinking skills overall.

  • Yes, Democrats are largely warmongers too, but that they ran the table against his handpicked candidates shows a clear repudiation of his policies and governance.

    The Republicans and Democrats are basically uniparty on foreign policy and regime change. People are opposed to the thousands of ways he's ruining our bags. Americans have not suddenly gained a conscience with respect to the atrocities our government commits outside our borders.

    Donald's misadventures in Venezuela resulting in the deaths of Americans, on an American airliner, for no good reason, would have a profoundly negative effect on his intentions toward warmongering.

    Maybe Donald's intentions for all of three seconds, but not the rest of the AmeriKKKan political apparatus. Life has no value in the US.

  • IMO it depends on if you are interested in the language or culture, or if you plan to be in contact with Russia or Russians. For example, do you plan to translate Russian? Do you plan to read Russian-language literature?

    Bigots deserve to be offended.

    Many people HATE Russia and the language.

    Not your problem if people are prejudiced against Russians for the actions of the government that lords over them. If you want to learn the language, go for it.

  • I mean I'm not sure how a collision would have stopped or even delayed regime change in Venezuela. The AmeriKKKan government barely even has to manufacture consent anymore for their atrocities.

    Like this year started off with the deaths of 64 innocent people in AmeriKKKan airspace, mostly USian citizens, due to military incompetence, and we've basically forgotten about it. USians clearly don't care whenever the military is the cause. Or basically ever unless it fucks someone personally.

  • Freedom of speech just can't be applied selectively, tho.

    I mean, for freedom of speech with respect to the State, yeah I'm with you. But if I remember correctly, Chomsky was arguing against antifascists deplatforming fascists, using freedom of speech to justify that opinion, which I think is a weak argument because the whole point of deplatforming fascists is to allow the maximal subset of people to speak.

    One day you restrict someone's speech, the next day they are in power and restrict yours.

    IMO deplatforming oppressive groups should be considered the maximalist position for freedom of speech. Letting them speak is equivalent to letting them win, which results in a net loss of free speech averaged over the whole community (e.g., LGBTQ people feel less likely to speak freely when homophobes are allowed to freely express LGBTQ-phobic views).
