  • the importance of Government checks and balances

Watching the US has been interesting and somewhat terrifying at the same time.

How much of our own democracy and institutions here rely on people acting in good faith, and consistent with precedents or tradition? If and/or when those are broken, are there actually any real laws? Is there anyone to prosecute or enforce those laws?

  • My favourite Gough quote:

"When Sir Winton Turnbull [who represented a large rural seat], a slow and sometimes stumbling speaker, was raving and ranting on the adjournment and shouted: "I am a Country member." I interjected "I remember." Sir Winton could not understand why, for the first time in all the years he had been speaking in the House, there was instant and loud applause from both sides."

  • Of course! We always eventually end up with two players in each industry. Because if there's two, that means there is no monopoly, and there is 'competition' in the 'free market'! Also, there is never any collusion or price fixing, trust me! Rejoice!

  • AI music can’t be copyrighted

That's true (though it may depend on which country you are in). But if "a human contributes creatively to an AI-generated work, such as by writing lyrics or modifying melodies, that work may be eligible for copyright".

You can guarantee that labels/authors will do enough to make sure they can get copyright.

  • Same thing has been happening in Australia.

Murdoch's organisations (nearly all the newspapers & TV) take every opportunity to criticise and attack the ABC (Australia's public broadcaster, equivalent to the BBC). The constant claim is that they are biased and left wing, even though a number of studies have shown that their reporting is neutral.

The last couple of Chairman of the ABC have been ex-Murdoch employees. So they are now being attacked from inside as well. Cuts have been made to news, current affairs and investigative journalism shows.

I wouldn't be surprised if they sold off Bluey.

  • You should probably try some specific servers too. Don't just pick "Australia" or even "Sydney". Go through the cities and pick individual servers one by one, and you might get lucky.

  • I download Mullvad VPN but when it’s connected via anywhere but Australia i can’t even access lemmy via this account.

How are you acccessing the site? Is it via app or via web?

I can access https://aussie.zone/ via browser connected to most non-Aussie VPNs, but I will get a momentary "Checking to see if you are human". If you still can't access via that, it may be your browser/configuration.

In general, many web sites block VPNs. Eg with Reddit and other sites like youtube, it depends on a server by server basis if they are blocked. Eg, the Sydney ones rarely work, but some others in Australia do.

  • Oh, yeah. The All Blacks kill us whenever they play here!

  • Australia is obviously one, the US another, so I wonder who the third is?

  • I'm getting a 404 Page Not found from this link

I had a quick look around the website, but couldn't find the article :(

  • There are cars that have paddle up/down shift, and mimic semi-auto cars. A number also have different engine sounds you can choose from 😀

It's all simulated and slower, of course, but apparently a lot of fun.

  • Vindication for bored ape NFT owners everywhere

  • Shrimp!

    Jump
  • Wait. Is he gonna eat that cat?

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

PUT THE KITTY DOWN AND PLACE YOUR HANDS ON YOUR HEAD RIGHT MEOW!

  • So only 250kw continuous. How shit. Pffffffffffffft!

  • Waiting for the zeta pre-production 'final-final-REALLY-FINAL' build

  • Imagine if you called the trailer your 'house' and left it in the one place all the time!

  • You probably need to downshift and rev it up to above 4000rpm to get near peak torque. And torque is lower below and above that.

An electric motor can hit peak torque at 0rpm. And maintain that peak torque up to, idk, faster than you or I will ever drive a vehicle. It's available instantly, always.

If you get a chance try driving the slowest, most boring electric car you can find. It will surprise you.

  • Oh, so it's Russia that's 'using “social media to spread vitriolic, polarising commentary on anti-immigration protests and pro-Palestinian marches” '

Bro, do you even social media?

This guy won't even pass the 16 year old age check.
