  • I have to say i don't actually believe Europeans are scared of this sort of threats. We know what's at stake for the US here. It would take a lunatic to actually do anything of this sort. Yeah, it would be bad for us, but it would be awful for the US.

    On the other hand, a lunatic is just what the US has just elected, so i guess we'll just have to see how this shakes out.

    Earlier this year, when republican senators started threatening EU countries with sanctions for rejecting Israel policy, everyone kind of just shrugged it off. There wasn't any real concern. Everyone was mostly going like, ok let them do it then. I'm feeling a sort of exhaustion from US drama in the political atmosphere around here.

  • Yeah, same. In Europe, a large rift is starting to appear between the ruling political class and their constituency and they're starting to notice and thread real carefully on the unwavering support for Israel.

    It used to be like, oh we defend Israeli right to exist and look at how Israel makes the desert bloom and now it's like oh look it's a difficult situation, it's complicated and we must stand by the ICC. So at least we're heading in the right direction.

    EU universities are withdrawing from Israel partnerships left and right while not overtly saying why, but Israelis know why. And the European education framework policy organs can't really do much about it, as all participation is voluntary.

  • I would honestly like to see how that would pan out. Obviously this is just a clueless senator pulling things out of his ass for political points, but the worldwide scandal of a US military incursion against an international court of law inside a NATO country would have massive repercussions. It would destabilize US partnerships, diplomacy and it would tarnish US standing even more than it already has been for the last 20 years. Every US opponent country would love for this to happen. This would definitely not go well with EU countries, most of which already said they would stand by the ICC's decision. Arab countries would turn on the US and third world countries probably would too, as the ICC case is massively popular with both those two parties.

    I doubt it would spark a war between the US and the EU, but it would certainly sour relationships real damn quick.

  • Personally i disliked it and i gave it 3 tries because everyone i know raved about it.

    It just feels like teenage drama through and through. It's the usual, 25 year old teens doing dumb things, being sexualized and being over the top dramatic with special cramming on classic cliques. There's some sci-fi elements to it, but at some point i loathed all the characters, in particular the protagonist.

  • It's their choice, but by not arresting him, they are weakening the international rule of law for everyone and basically giving dictators worldwide arguments to use when the rule of international law turns of them.

    I hope it's worth it, for whatever misguided mission Germany is on about. We'll just be waiting for the apologies to the victims of this other genocide 30-40 years from now, for another "dark past" of Germany, and hope there won't be an abrupt overcorrection to helping the other side perpetrate a genocide, since, as we are seeing, Germany is not solid on sensible middle terms. It is possible to both support Judaism and not support genocide simultaneously.

    Hell, it would even be possible to support an Israeli state and protect a Palestinian state if world leaders had half a spine.

  • At this point the anti semitism accusation has been so diluted that it's beginning to carry very little weight. It's hard to find someone who has done worse to jews worldwide in the contemporary era than Benjamin Netanyahu. The comparison of a genocide of which he and his administration is guilty of to actual historical cases of anti semitism is beyond embarrassing.

    The world at large rejects Israel with disgust.

  • Oh yeah, many times. I've had a guy run his hands through my hair and push a boner against me. I've had a teenage girl lick my bicep and giggle at me with her friends. I've had an older woman just grab my butt and pretend she didn't do it. There was another guy who was just petting my shoulders and leg, discreetly through the crowd.

    It's just those things like what are you gonna do as a guy ? Report it ? Hey mr officer, a teenage girl licked my arm and then her friends giggled at me, if you run you can still arrest them ? I'd just be laughed at. No point reporting it i guess. It's just gross and annoying. I always chalked it up as problems of living in a big city.

    I've never been at risk of being raped though. I am pretty muscular. I can see how it would be scary to be and much, much worse.

  • I honestly think it's ridiculous our public transportation is so unsafe to warrant this, but if it's necessary, then so be it. But if we're going to make women only carriages we should make an equal number of men only carriages, because not all women will use the women only carriages and i don't want my available commute space compromised because authorities can't keep public spaces safe for women.

    I know it sounds a "but what about men" comment, but let me explain why. At my gymn, we used to have an open space for everyone. Then they decided to segregate about 1/3 of the space and make it ladies only while the remaining space was to be for everyone. The result is that, despite having machines available in the women's area, women want to be in the everyone's area all the time while the women's area is usually empty. The result is that there's no space for everyone to train in and men just have to queue to be able to train at peak times, usually in the late afternoon. We all pay the same, we all need our exercise, why are men having less ? Because we share the same gender with rapists ? How is that my fault ?

    I can see the exact same thing happening with transportation. You limit men's available commute space on account of having an unsafe space for women, then the women's carriage goes empty while the everyone carriage forces everyone to be up against everyone. This is unacceptable. I have been sexually harassed as a man in public transportation too and while i recognize it's not as bad for me as it is for women, because it only happened a few times, it always happened by forcing me to be smushed against a ton of people.

    I would prefer if everyone respected everyone and we could live like civilized people together in an equal and safe society, where nobody was threatened, harassed or raped, but if we're going to start sex segregation at least do it in such a manner so that everyone has equal amounts of space and opportunity to carry out their lives without being inconvenienced. If we segregate spaces, make x space for women, x space for men and x for everyone together. None of this special places just for women while everyone pays the same crap. That way if the common area is too full, i can just move to the men only area and that's it. If we can't be decent, at least let's try to be fair.

  • This kind of behavior is harmful to the legitimacy of journalism itself and entirely self defeating at pushing an agenda.

    When journalism is mistrusted, misinformation is boosted. When people find out information is misrepresented, they will seek out other sources and be less likely to believe information even when it is legitimate.

    We all lost today and the significance of this loss has not dawned on the news agencies. I really hope they don't come crying again about how journalism is dying because people don't care for buying newspapers anymore.

    I really hope at some point we go back to the apolitical, strict facts representation and unbiased coverage of events. That's what journalism is supposed to be. Not this tailored version of events reporting that we often get.

  • This will never work in the EU. Our regulatory organs are apolitical. They don't depend on the ruling parliament. The parliament doesn't appoint the chairs of the organs, nor does the president. The courts also operate independently from the parliament, other than the laws they pass. There are no executive orders to give preferential treatment to some companies in Europe. There are no shady backroom deals because 28 countries must be kept on track at all times.

    Empty threats do not concern us.

  • Hopefully, the European powers that be will start realizing that Israel isn't a part of us and we don't want that Zionist hatred on our streets. Maybe leave it in Israel next time and behave in a civilized manner. Honestly, i don't want to see football with them or Eurovision with them either.

    I'd be ashamed every day if i had to wake up as an Israeli. What a disgrace of a people. Judaism will always have a place in modern Europe but anti Palestinian sentiment does not and i wonder how much longer until both the powers that be and the international community at large realizes European leadership and the European people are not of the same mind when it comes to Israel.

  • I don't know why OP is getting downvoted. This comment is correct. The economies of freight on rails are predicated on scale. The bigger the train, the better. It only requires a few locomotives that have the biggest maintenance costs. Cars are unpowered and require less maintenance. A train can transport thousands of tons. An average mid-size train in Europe would carry about 2000 tonnes of freight.

    To add an electric motor per ton of cargo transported (as detailed in the article) adds an excessive amount of overhead costs to the cargo transported, in upfront costs, maintenance and environmental impact, making it less competitive than a regular freight line. With the space of the same infrastructure and probably the same investment, you could instead run a freight line, especially considering the distance between Osaka and Tokyo. Over time, the freight line wins out over the individual one ton self-propelled cargo wagons. Remember, every propulsion system breaks down and requires new parts and fixing. The more of them there are, the more complex your transportation system becomes, thus more expensive. An equivalent to a mid sized freight train in pods would require about 2000 electric motors, as opposed to one or two dedicated electrical locomotives.

    They should instead improve the trains to be able to run mostly automated. This requires track sensors and advanced signaling.

  • They won't. Anything on a bullet train line needs to go at a speed of a bullet train. If it goes slower, it slows down the bullet trains on the line.

    Cargo does not require bullet train speeds, only passengers do. The added expense does not translate to a better service. Cargo is not time sensitive like people are, so usually freight trains go under 100 km/h. This requires a whole lot less infrastructure and a whole cheaper locomotives and wagon compositions, as locomotives and wagons that go faster are more expensive and require more maintenance.
