  • Once at a job when I was supposed to make a website work (and I'll stress, I am not a graphic designer and wasn't hired as one!) I made the layout as nice as I could, but I insisted on only using named CSS colors because I just do. not. care. about color theory. By which I mean, I don't want to waste time and do a crappy job at it when someone else could do it much better and properly and faster. So the named colors are meant as an obvious placeholder for a more creative person to replace with something real later.

When my boss gave me feedback he just said that it's ugly. I started saying "yeah, the colors are placeholders, we can change that easily. I'll fiddle it with it I'll stick with named colors" (above explanation was to follow).

Before I even got to the named colors bit, he interrupted me and said "don't use named colors ever".

I guess maybe I was hired as a graphic designer? News to me!

(I'm making him sound awful but he was actually a really good boss. This interaction is not representative of our usual dynamics. I'm not employed by him anymore but we are on good terms.)

  • So like, how do refunds work?

If you can't get a refund and you paid double, you're screwed and you might not even get a satisfactory product. But if you can get a refund, you can just try it and immediately get a refund if it didn't go your way, breaking the system.

On the flip side, if you won the gamble and paid nothing, you might still get a shit product. In this case you can't get a refund because you didn't pay anything, but the product still isn't worth its purported price, and you still took the gamble based on this false value. It's still a rip-off.

Maybe gambling and shopping don't go together quite as well as it first appears.

  • Depressing that it's only 20%. (I'm in those 20%)

  • 2 years? That's 5 months of hair growth, tops!

Then again she could have gotten any number of haircuts in the meantime so I'll allow it.

  • What are you talking about? The money doesn't go to the Israeli government, it goes to the private companies or individuals who applied for the grant. Are you saying that every single person and organization in this country invests any spare cash they've got on weapons?

  • From the article linked by OP:

Weapons aren't really part of this.

  • Trying to parse your comment... Are you saying Europe invests in weaponry and surveillance, or Israel does? Is Israel the laboratory, as in, Europe is 'using' Israel to tests weapons?

I'm not really interested in this topic, but I don't think the programs talked about here are in those industries. Will have to check.

  • [Edit: all is clear now, see my other reply]

Speaking from Israel, I'm just as confused as you are. My best guess: Israel's reputation (before the war) as a "Start-Up Nation" was well earned, a lot of technology and innovation was happening here. Arguably still is (hard to tell with all the war stuff). So generally it made sense to invest in Israeli startups simply to advance technology in general.

But this is obviously an EU-centric program. All other countries listed are EU. So it's still weird.

  • Israel

  • Also, actual butt plugs. Yes, they can and they will slip inside to the point you can't get them out.

  • When I visited the US I was excited to see squirrels running around. We don't have squirrels where I'm from. We took pictures.

It must have looked like we were excited to witness a cloud in the sky.

  • Oh, I hate a lot about Android/Google too. One particular pet peeve of mine is that WebAPKs are still exclusive to Chrome (and, on Samsung devices only, Samsung Internet) despite the FAQ promising that "We are working on it. We are committed to making this available to all browsers on Android and we will have more details soon." (Last updated 2017-05-21)

There is no good option in smartphones, you have to choose the lesser evil. For me that's Android. I can appreciate that for some people it would be iOS. What drives me up a wall is that people defend these awful practices.

  • It was just a snarky comment. Apple does a lot of things well. I just find their anticompetitive practices deplorable.

  • No.

I don't have the mental capacity right now to write a proper response, but hard no on that. Live lectures are amazing.

  • I'm pretty happy up here on the surface to be honest.

  • Nothing in Apple's ecosystem is worth it.

  • LOL

  • Yes, let's keep this community family friendly. I could do without such obscenities.
