  • But this defense costs money. Likely thousands. That shouldn't be the case

  • The left should protest democrats until they put up good candidates

  • If only there was someplace closer

  • But it is numbers. It's always been about numbers. Humans are social creatures. We see everybody agreeing about something, we tend to also agree. It's a weird phenomenon that has research behind it. It's not like you or I are going to become Trump supporters because we see everybody agreeing with him. There are somethings that are immovable. But many opinions are movable and in those areas this groups are attempting to get numbers. It should be met with an equal and greater force. At the same time we need to quit being defensive and go back on the offensive. We should be creating groups and building networks. The algorithms do respond.

  • How do they get this data. Isn't it stuff that is collected so it's not even a full set of data. It's just a collection that some amazing people were able to pull since Facebook locks down their api

There is a well-established “perception gap” between what we think others believe and what they actually believe. A recent poll by ReClimate found that 42 per cent of Canadians think about addressing climate change at least weekly, and yet they believe only 26 per cent of their neighbours do the same. Similarly, research has found as many as 89 per cent of people want more action on climate change — yet those 89 per cent tend to believe they’re in the minority.

So many people shit on me here in lemmy for saying this, but we have to do better. We have to nut the fuck up and deal with this. Instead of the exodus off these social media platforms, we need to be the ones drowning them the fuck out. Who cares if they're owned by who. It's all still works based on numbers. We need numbers to identify problems and combat the spread of this. That's how we all felt back in the day. Defeat misinformation by engaging with it. Somewhere along the line we were all convinced to ignore it which only allowed it to spread more rapidly.

If they want to fuck around, we're suppose to be the tech literate. We need grass roots networks and forums identifying the leaders and these small number of problem users and we need to make it as difficult as we can for them to work.

  • Go back a couple months and lemmy has a bunch of posts defending this using children as the reason. Weirdly only a week or so of activity then it stopped.

  • Hahaha hahaha haha

On lemme they broke these groups down into multiple groups consisting of 6 people each. Essentially they're built to destroy any possible momentum before you get anywhere. There's a ton of groups to post about memes with loose formats that build community. So if you wanted to post about beans or moths you're golden. The actual groups to be more political or social minded are fragmented purposefully. This one here is only news articles, this one is only mêmes, I don't think there's even a single one for clips so that isn't even an option. Good luck.

I think lemme very much encompasses why the left has regressed over the past 20 years. They're even being regressed by anti vaccine advocates. It's pretty sad. I wish we could be more socially aware about how to build these things up. But it does make sense why there isn't much for the boycotts or leftist groups.

  • My conspiracy is that social media is being used to make every one much more callouse and cold to each other. That's where they break the country. The bots knew it was very easy to manipulate the left to scare them off digital spaces. Now they have free reign to make all kinds of groups and posts filled with comments uncontested. Stuff like Pretti good shot on any shooting, hundreds of them. Over time it changes how people think since there is no push back. As it pushes people to be angrier and pissed off, it moves the public opinion away from any leftist since they're seen as very weak and ineffective

  • But would this be asking rich people to sacrifice their wealth for a greater good.

  • Most people don't know what's going on. They don't need to defend much. It's already out of the news cycle

  • They're not going to win. MAGA convinced Leftist to take themselves off social media. The spaces where swing voters are swung.

  • Libs of tiktok has already started posting about this kid. The left didn't bother to figure out how to defend their own. Confrontation is icky. They're going to cook him

  • Yea I'm agreeing with this. I think we're at a point that every country needs to band together and block these sites. I'm not seeing any benefit to having these as they are

Im coming back because I had another thought. Why don't we focus on marketable protests like this online rather than trying to get people in the streets?

  • They're still limited. Their algorithm can still be manipulated even when it's weighing content to the right. It's almost easier since it feeds you their content which makes it easier to counter their bullshit, overwhelm their messages they're trying to get out, or just flat out troll the fuck out of them.

  • You're actually proving the point. r/conservative is a sub reddit within the bigger site. Outside of it lots of people make fun and control the narrative on it. This takes their ability and usefulness away when it's just bots communicating. It also let's people become aware what the next talking points will be.

So why you prove my point is that individuals may be able to limit their comments on a post but the while site is harder to censor and with enough people working, you can disrupt their propaganda. Fascists grow on misinformation and displaying power through imagery. You tear them apart when Greg shows up in his nazi coat and people post instant memes on every platform. They grow when they control the narrative and they can't control the narrative unless they remove us

  • The algorithm are controlled by engagement and profits, they're not controlled by MAGA. MAGA attempts to steer the algorithm to their content by convincing the left to abandon all social media

  • They can only control certain aspects of the variable. They still have parts you can control. They still need their people to view posts and guess what, those posts still have comments.

I don't actually think "they" control it in the way you think. I still think it's profit and engagement based. They feed you stuff based on total user engagement. That's why the are so many bots on the left that keep telling everyone on the left to disengage or quit the major platforms. They want to rebalance the algorithm to their content.

It's a numbers game. The goal is to create more content. There's a study that shows it takes a small percentage of a group to shift their views for the entire group to change. It's 10%. The other aspect is the views expressed can't be loose. They have to be incredibly immovable and confident. This is what the bots are doing on the right. The solution would be to mimic that, not avoid it. It just depends if you're looking to stop or fight them or if you're just casually wanting to observe and complain daily. Social media is one of the critical tools for fascists.

  • I disagree. I think social media plays a much larger role in this then anyone is willing to admit.

Just look at the effort by people who want power to to manipulate and own social media.

Whare i think needs to happen is the left need to go back to their roots. Create their own bots. Leverage ai. Confront them on every social media space

  • I worry that with the tools we have now, it changes how fascism works. They failed over and over and over until they are given what is essentially a nuclear weapon. It's not just the internet. It's amount of wealth in the hands of people who never deserved it. It's the number of middling average men with tremendous power and money. It's not like the 40s where there was more limits on basic things, logistic and communication.
