  • This is somewhat similar to cannons from xiangqi, which move like rooks but can only capture by leaping over another piece on the line of attack.

  • Oh hey, it's the Furies from Overly Sarcastic Productions' video about The Oresteia.

  • By asking to play a centaur, you're either declaring that your character will be constantly naked from the waist down, or opening the can of worms that is "what would centaur pants even look like?"

  • Fun fact: "nuclear" ultimately comes from the Latin nucula, 'little nut'. The c and l being adjacent is the result of metathesis, similar to pronouncing "ask" as "ax".

  • …in service of his fantasy epic.

This is wrong. The the histories, cultures, etc. were in service of the conlangs. Sure, he eventually wrote some stories set in that world, but that wasn't the reason he created it.

  • Zigmenthotep on YouTube covered F.A.T.A.L as part of their "Let's make us a character" series. It took four episodes, in a format that is usually one-and-done.

However bad you've heard the game is, I assure you it's worse.

  • The blunt angles and steel doors look futuristic, for sure

Do they, though? It's always looked to me like something from the background of a PS1 game, intended to give the impression of a moving vehicle but never seen close up.

  • He cherishes peace with all his heart and doesn't care how many men, women, and children he needs to kill to get it.

  • So this adaptation The Tales of Dunk and Egg, stories in which one of the two main characters is a Targaryen and future king, is never going to follow anyone in the upper class. Riiight…

  • It's probably asymptotic.

  • I still haven't read The Shepherd's Crown for this exact reason. I'm not ready to never have a new Discworld book.

  • It's a decent enough illustration of the sort of thing that can happen when you translate an idiom literally. To be truly accurate that panel would have to be in a language other than English, but then it would be useless to anyone who doesn't also understand that second language.

  • Trusting a recipe to give you the exact timing for something with as many uncontrolled variables as home cooking is not actually any less insane than eyeballing it. The real lesson is: learn how to test for doneness.

One way of doing this for jams and jellies is to stick a plate in the freezer before you start and then drizzle a little on the cold plate when you think it might be done to see if it sets.

  • 'There’s no greys, only white that’s got grubby. I’m surprised you don’t know that. And sin, young man, is when you treat people as things. Including yourself. That’s what sin is.’‘It’s a lot more complicated than that—’‘No. It ain’t. When people say things are a lot more complicated than that, they means they’re getting worried that they won’t like the truth. People as things, that’s where it starts.'
