Considering the high overlap between Lemmy users and internet savvy people, I would say that we are not a good representation.

Remember how well "if you can't fight them, join them!" worked for all of those people in Nazi Germany and WW2? Definitely caving in to the Nazis was a smart move...
Trump is a loser piece of shit wannabe Nazi, you don't cave to Nazis, you fight them at all costs because caving is always worse than you think it is.
Simple answer is no but...
Stock android, like all commercial OS is inherently spyware. Google does have access to it and in theory could do anything, but that is only "in theory" because as far as we know stock android does not come with keyloggers and data exfiltration tools, it spies on you in the way of "telemetry" meaning that Google decided that certain data is useful and so they "anonymize" it and collect it, this data can be: wifi networks, location, phone usage, and more.
So in theory it is possible that stock android either already has spyware to collect personal app data that no one ever noticed (very unlikely) or that google will push an update with such software (somewhat unlikely)
Now if you use other Google apps, especially gboard and google assistant, you are definitely sharing SOME amount of peesonal text with google.
The reality is that you should consider your threat model, which means to consider what kind of risk you are willing to take and what kind you are willing to make a change to avoid. It is perfectly reasonable to say that you are not willing to use gboard or google assistant, but you are willing to use the stock android, understanding that you are sharing some data with Google, but most likely no app data (such as your texts in Signal)
Same thing about choosing a messenger. WhatsApp is made and managed by Meta, a company that lives off of user data. So even though WhatsApp claims (and seems to really be) end to end encrypted, you can still be sure that Meta is collecting everything they can, which probably means: who you are texting, how much, at what time, how much you use the app, location, and much more. Signal is open source and managed by a non-profit that does have a good track record, and because ut is open source you can also choose a different client (like Molly) which further reduces the Signal Foundation's hold on your chats (if you fear that) So you could say that because all of your friends use WhatsApp you are willing to accept that Meta will collect a bunch of data on you, or you could decide that you are not okay with that data collection and therefore choose Signal. It is up to you. In any case, E2EE is a must as it protects you from unauthorized access from hackers.
This is ironic right? Because literally the word "Effort" is an item in the list. I think this is a woosh
Every comment you make just cements my point further.
Doubt that it would be Meshtastic, it is inherently not built for internet levels of bandwidth. But I can see a future where you have intranets that are free and community driven with something like Meshtastic with higher bandwidth and you still pay for an ISP that can give you access to the full internet (because nothing currently can replace underwater optic fiber)
Sure, very convenient for you to find one thing I did wrong and ignore everything else. I'm definitely the one with flawed logic...
I just thought that "gaol" is some hebrew word like idf or kneeset, so I searched with that assumption. Stupid mistake? Sure, does it make me an idiot that can't have valid opinions? No.
Ignore all the arguments I made and just focus on a single unrelated mistake?
For relationships: "Is what i'm about to say/do benifical to me, this person, or the relationship?"
If not, maybe it is me ego or hurt feelings, and so I should ignore it for now and if I feel the need to, I can later analyse it and decide again.
Also, never go hungry or emotional to the grocery store.
They are human too! Can't you see!!?
Shower faster? How long are you in the shower to have time to develop good ideas and have time to forget them?
Thats not a good example because in Nuremberg trials they specifically trialed generals and political leaders, which held positions that were directly related to the crimes, I don't think generals in the IDF are remotely close to innocent.
But by putting a general who planned and executed war crimes and an office worker that maybe was responsible for office supplies in the same category, you are ignoring the reality of the situation and you are harming the severe and important definition of war crimes.
Your blind categorisation is harming your cause, which I assume is justice and protection of human rights and life.
Schrödingers murder: You are both a murder and not a murder. You are not a murderer as you did not choose to kill a person, but as this can not continue forever you are also a murderer since it is quite certain that eventually someone will choose murder.
Isn't that a terrible idea?
When finding huge sums of cash/gold whatever, isn't it illegal in most places to not report it?
So best case scenario is that you find it and no one else is looking for it and you carefully use it over years as to not raise a falg for your local tax agency or bank.
Worst case scenario is that you found something stolen and eventually the police finds you and you get caught up in a much worse crime?
I did search for it, I guess that I over did the search terms and should have just searched the word itself. Thanks! Word of the day I guess!
Sure, a few months in jail seems like an option, But there are 2 important factors here:
- Wether they are going to be combatants or not
- The fact that these are young adults / teens in a very normalized situation.
If you are 18yo and fresh out of school, understand that the IDF is in the wrong and condemn it but are now facing the choice between doing what society expects of you and going for 2-3 years of office work at the IDF or go against the law, go to jail for an unknown amount of months and possibly face social consequences, you might choose the office work. It does not obsolve you from all faults, but it does not make you genocidal or a rapist.
This approach of grouping everyone together is just adding more fuel to the fire. Everyone sticks their head in the sand and says "This is the problem, there is no nuance!" And guess what? Sometimes you will be more right and sometimes you will be more wrong, but you will very very rarely be correct.
Firstly I couldn't find anything about "gaol" so I don't know what you mean...
Secondly, armies are mostly non-combatant soldiers, which can range from working on weapons to office workers. As fucked up as the IDF is, if you are forced to join it and become an office worker, you might not be free of fault, but you are far from committing a genocide or murdering babies.
Gonna get downvoted but fuck this.
The IDF is terrible, the Israeli government is terrible, it is genocidal and there is no excuse for that.
Yet, the IDF is mandatory for all 18yo in Israel, meaning that you could be completely against the IDF and the government, and still be in the IDF.
Imagine being an 18yo who sees the genocide, understands the that Israel is in the wrong, and is now forced to join the army that is in the process of a genocide, and immediately receiving a gun. Fucked up situation that might even lead someone to suicide, especially if maybe you are already in a dark place.
My point is that there are IDF soldiers that are absolutely genocidal, the IDF as an army is horrific, but because of mandatory conscription you can't treat it the same as a voluntary army where people choose to be there (kinda, poverty and propaganda can often make it more complex)
Just as I wouldn't celebrate the suicide of a Russian just because of what Russia is doing, I wouldn't celebrate the suicide of an Israeli just because they were forced to join the IDF.
I think that these mindless celebrations of death jist fuel the cycle of hatred. If you support a genocide I have no compassion for you, but a forced conscription is not a choice.
This is just the ADHD maneuver in picture form.
