  • I’ve been wondering what the best non-Mac laptop is. Like something that’s premium feeling without being the same price as a Mac.

I have a Lenovo laptop-14 that I really like, but it’s a bit thick and the screen is a bit dim at times. The speakers are also very quiet.

Is an xps what I should be looking at?

  • That’s fair, but the cars downtime and dealing with a mechanic costs more than just the $$$.

I’ve had a car in and out of the shops for months trying to nail down an over heating issue. What a stress that was. I don’t think I’ll ever consider an ice car again to be honest.

  • Do you have a link to that?

You know… just so I know what it is and don’t click on it by accident.

  • I have one of these 9-in-1 usb-c hubs.

It blows my mind that so much can be handled by such a small single cable.

  • Is it worse for the environment than driving 80 minutes round trip to the dump to ask about it?

    Genuine question.

  • Yeah! Even if not an m3, the chip in the 15 pro is good enough for most people. If you really need more power then, get an m3.

I’d love if my phone was my computer in that way.

  • For me it’s less about the environment and most about the long term cost savings and needing less maintenance.

  • No you do not get it.

At Apple we make magical devices that are unlike anything done before. We have truly revolutionized computing with over priced hardware.

If you don’t have a Mac then you are not cool and not good at your job.

  • Even with side loading, you will still be pretty limited as the iPad is decently locked down. First of all it needs a decent window manager. That alone would go a long way.

But honestly, these things should be running full blown macOS when they are docked to a mouse and keyboard.

They had an 11” air at one point, so screen size can’t be the issue.

  • Yuh-huh! Just get a terminal emulator from the App Store. I will be just a few dollars a month. Then you can ssh into a Linux server you have somewhere.

    See it’s an entire computer!

  • It is quick. it does not need to load a bunch of things and in certain tasks, I can do multiple things at once.

I also find it easier to navigate and edit files with tab to complete.

  • Let's say you paid $150 for microsoft office. One day microsoft says, we are only doing office 365 subscriptions and when you launch word, it will not let you use it. It makes you pay for a cloud subscription instead.

  • Well Joplin support encryption. I sync with Dropbox and have it all encrypted.

  • I love this idea.

What if cities implemented special routes that are cycle only routes.

They could make small roads that lead to popular parts of the city easily and safely bikeable.

God! I wish my roads were not so dangerous.

  • I HATE Dropbox.

I tried to use them recently and their service had some problems.

They have an option to "stream" files when you need them. The only problem is you need an internet connection to access them. I did not trust this kind of system and I actually need to access my files even without internet.

So there is a way to make the files available offline. Great! Problem solves. NOPE! They offer an option to have your files available offline, but they might remove the files and make them only available in the cloud if you local storage gets low.

That is really all they say about it and there is no option to turn this off. I was uncomfortable about their vagueness and my inability to disable this.

Within 24 hours of paying for their service I learned of this and they refused to refund my purchase.

    PLEASE NEVER WORK WITH DROPBOX

  • I’m an American and I had a pretty decent job out of college and the idea of moving out of my parents house without roommates was impossible. In fact I don’t know a single person who did it.

$5000 might not be life changing for me, but it would take me a really long time to save that much.

Americans have high salaries compared to the rest of the world, but everything is really expensive so things kind of balance out.

One thing to consider is that the higher salaries make it easier to get things like an iPhone or MacBook. But all the things that are needs like housing, food, and a car are almost too expensive to afford.

Most people have a car loan, most people don’t even dream of owning a home any longer. When you see that you will never earn enough for a home, then you don’t really save for it.

When the amount you earn that. An be saved is too little then you don’t really bother with it.

Most Americans do not live nearly as well as it is portrayed on TV or in movies.

    update

I’ll add on to this that most Americans have debt for some reason or another besides having a car and house. A lot of people have student debts that are oppressive some people have medical debt as well.

Gas prices are reasonably low, but everything is so far that you end up using a decent amount of gas to get around.

  • Everything needs to be taxed and put into improving the country and lives of its citizens.

But the first thing is to actually tax the rich. The second thing is to not spend it on bombs.

  • I was just thinking about why many things on Linux are better. Like the install process on Linux is years ahead of windows.

Then it occurred to me that windows only improves things that can make them money. If you need to install windows, then you can deal with the crappy installer.

Linux devs improve the parts they think need to be better. The decisions are not guided by money and can be made without bias.

  • That’s so funny 😂😂

I can totally understand. Everything about English is difficult.
