Do you think he might like the warmth? Parrot feet don't have the feather insulation owl feet have, and I believe their circulation actually restricts to barely keep feet above freezing and save most warmth for their torso. Sounds uncomfortable.
My impression is he didn't know when to stop. He could have had a much longer lasting rule of a decent sized territory, but he never stopped spending tens of thousands of soldiers lives on expansion.
I don't think this is an ADHD thing. Brains delude us into false senses of control in all kinds of ways. For example, withdrawal reflexes like jerking a hand back from a too-hot surface are carried out by neurons in the spinal cord before the too-hot signal has even traveled to the brain - but we feel as if that jerk was a conscious decision. Recognizing that fake sense of control is an illusion is helpful in figuring out what few levers we do have and learning to use them.
Military (who can't refuse orders), retiree scabs (presumably lucratively paid), and those who can't afford to go without a paycheck to support the strike (was ~10% of the controllers in 1981).
On Monday, August 3rd, 1981, over 13,000 ATCs went on strike. By the morning, the strike had stopped over 50% of flights; this number rose to 70% later in that day... ATC towers were staffed by non-striking ATCs, along with military personnel and retired ATCs who agreed to return to work. Ultimately, the government action was effective at defeating the union. Only 1,300 of the striking workers were able to retain their jobs, and none of them attained their demands.
Are these young sibling screeches, or mates, or some other relationship? It's cute to see them cuddling like that, but a little surprising since I usually think of owls as solitary.
Not the Americans, no. The bases employ a lot of German civilians, and Germany is covering (as a loan to the US) the paychecks owed to the German employees.
State officials said they had urged the German finance ministry to step in and ensure payment of the wages owed to Germans employed at the assorted U.S. military bases within its territory...
The ministry is preparing approximately $50 million in emergency funding to ensure workers are paid on time, German news outlet Tagesschau reported Wednesday.
...A union statement Monday said that the current shutdown, which began Oct. 1, differs from previous ones, when German staffers employed by the U.S. received pay in accordance with German labor law and the NATO Status of Forces Agreement.
“What is new is that the current U.S. administration is apparently unwilling to comply with German laws,” the Ver.di statement said. Rheinland-Pfalz officials said Germany expects to be reimbursed once the U.S. government reopens.
Debt is less risky to a country than a person in the sense of "if you owe the bank a million dollars, you have a problem; if you owe the bank a billion dollars, the bank has a problem". Smaller countries with less attractive debt definitely have problems associated with excessive national debt. US debt is especially resilient because the next-most-attractive national debt is much less attractive, so it can fall a long ways before switching investments makes sense. But it can't fall forever - there is competition - and the complexities of the market mean we can't predict exactly what actions would be the final straw to trigger that shift, so even flirting in that direction is hugely risky.
Even short of the US falling out of most-attractive-debt status, there are bad things that happen as it becomes seen as more risky, tied to the way that risk perception drives up interest rates on Treasury bonds. Higher long-term interest rates make the national debt go up faster, accelerating the risk of full-on loss of most attractive status. They also benchmark all other interest rates in the economy, making all kinds of business investments less viable and thus stifling the innovation needed to keep the economy delivering for its people.
Voter enthusiasm is correlated with turnout. Less enthused Republican or independent Hispanics are more likely to stay home on election day.
Agree those who voted for Trump last election are unlikely to switch to voting Democrat, but if they stay home that makes the path to a Democrat victory more viable. And for that, polls like this are a helpful data point.
There is some value in a standard serving size so we can compare nutrient density between products that come in different sized packages. Often labels will have two columns on the label, one for a standardized amount and another column for the entire package.
The navigation update-to-car limitations are a big reason Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are a thing. Externally provided services you have to connect to your phone for. Car features work on the car. This seems ok.
For something like workplace safety, sure, we should have a regulatory body that researches, teaches, and enforces good safety practices so no one gets hurt putting up a building or running a fryer or whatever.
If there is an armed gang hurting my neighbors and family - dealing with them is going to have risk of getting hurt, and I hope we pay someone enough to make that risk worthwhile for them and the loved ones they could potentially leave behind.
There's something like thirty boxes of information on the thing, and all the others are correct. I suspect whoever was typing it (on a typewriter - this was pre-computers) had several in a row that really were male babies and just got that stuck in their head.
I started using in-shower lotion because I needed something (had a small wound that didn't heal for more than a year), water-based lotions weren't cutting it, and I couldn't get the quantity right with oil-based (too little didn't work, too much was uncomfortably greasy). Once I found it and it worked for me, I used the Olay in-shower lotion for many years, but it recently seems to have been discontinued, so now I'm using Nivea. The smell is too strong for my taste (pleasant, just too much of it), but at this point I am too hooked on the in-shower convenience to try anything else.
My (cis female) birth certificate erroneously was filled out with "male". Same error happened on the birth certificate of my mother (who is also cis female). It's never caused either of us any problems. Schools enrolled us as female, driver's licenses say female, etc.
When I was in college in the early 2000s, my dad's mother helped me get a copy of my birth certificate, and was horrified her beautiful granddaughter was listed as male. She called up the county clerk and raised Cain, and then informed me it had been corrected. I've never needed to get a fresh copy since then, so I don't know for sure, but it sounded like the word of an angry old lady was enough to get an update filed.
When losing a driver's license means losing a job and access to groceries, the standards have to be lowered. Even as low as they are, people with suspended licenses still mostly drive, because our infrastructure requires it to live. Better public transit is the only path to giving bad drivers a way to participate in society without having to drive.
Some of the stories do ask. Every one I have seen or heard, they still support Trump. They are unhappy about the specific issue affecting them, but they still believe the rest of his policies are the best ones on offer.
I do not believe turning voters is viable. But discouraged, less enthused Trump voters are more likely to stay home next election, so I see examples like this as potential hopeful signs for our country's future.
