  • No, just a waste of compute and electricity.

    1. The US currently aligned with Russia.
    2. That would risk WWIII even if we weren't.
    3. No we shouldn't be aligned with Russia, but that's the dumb timeline we find ourselves to be in right now.
  • Because sometimes its better to not ask if you can or should and instead try. It was obviously popular enough that it still has a soft spot in many tech enthusiasts' minds. And arguably its the element of any OS that you encounter the most. Going from your home computer to even just a computer at the public library, one thing was almost guaranteed to be the same and that's the desktop background. So why not make it really high quality? They had no idea how far resolution would come and what would end up being sufficient, but because of their decision, even now people seek out that image for their desktops.

  • Today I Learned @lemmy.world

TIL Ronald Reagan was deeply influnced by SciFi when implementing policy. He reportedly initiated cybersecurity changes within the DoD after watching the movie WarGames and asking if it was plausible.

  • I can't imagine the hell he's been through.

instead scheduling an evidentiary hearing on a pending question before the court: whether Abrego is the target of a “selective and vindictive prosecution” by the Trump administration.

The question should be what he should receive for the documented selective and vindictive prosecution by the Trump administration.

  • Your job sounds really cool! How likely is Alberta to be on fire again this year?

  • That's what's crazy to me, they survived the dot com crash and were so diversified that I have no idea how they stayed afloat. I would think that all of the combined expenses across all of their ventures without a true cash cow would sink them. Instead they survived and became the trash heap of consumer rights violations that they are.

  • You can't really compare online book retailer Amazon to global online marketplace Amazon. Your underlying point is still mostly correct, but I would exclude the years that they were primarily focused on books. From my lived memory they didn't really become the online retail juggernaut until a few years after the launch of Prime. Free shipping turned them into what it is today. So maybe the best comparison would be from like 2006-2016? Or maybe I'm wrong and the distinction isn't necessary. Idk. I'm just trying to foster conversation

  • Should it? Yes. Would I be any happier with either of those two you listed? Only marginally. Considering the significance of the French relationship with the United States (probably second only to England in terms of importance/loyalty of alliance) I would much rather the ambassador be someone like Karine Jean-Pierre. Born in France and worked as the White House Press Secretary for 3 years. Her political affiliation is independent. And it shouldn't matter but she's an openly LGBTQ black woman and unfortunately diversity is lacking at the moment. So she's experienced in public communication and she has a Master's degree from Columbia University in Public Administration.

  • I made the correct choice. I want boring. That's the whole reason I left Windows. Printer drivers constantly failing, WiFi drivers somehow, constant power drain and overheating while my laptop was asleep and in my bookbag.

  • Do I want to die? No.

Best I can do is wish them death and in the meantime voice my disapproval in peaceful protests and repeatedly demanding more of my representation AND fellow constituents when it comes to enforcing laws.

  • Sure thing mister criticize but provide no insightful alternative.

Literally anyone else reading this, do you mind filling me in since givesomefucks can't be bothered?

  • Oh don't be like that. I specifically asked you to provide a rebuttal if I was ignorant to something. 🙄

  • He had two options. Allow new data centers to be built or put a moratorium on new data centers. If you're mad that he chose the latter, then you support the former. If I'm missing something, please give me the thought process.

Maybe you can say more can be built with documentation of proper power sourcing, noise damping, permits, etc. But it wouldn't be well received here. People would just say that the state is okay with it and just wants their cut. Plus at the end of the day, its just another data center owned my monstrously wealthy individuals. The upfront cost, hard/software complexity, and the economy of scale for data ensures that there is no mom and pop data centers. So competition within the space is already minimal.

  • He's done nothing but good in Illinois since getting elected. If we're going to start lopping off the billionaire class' heads then I'd be campaigning to make his the last to fall.

Your proposed solution is to keep allowing data centers to be built all over the state which clearly no one wants, so the best we can do for now is stop any more new projects and figure out how to manage them.

  • Its going to be pretty pricey but the commuter bag from LTT is probably exactly what you are looking for. Canadian company that's mostly tech centric but they have a consumer goods portion of the company that focuses on making high quality items that are built to last.
