  • Admittedly, I had communism on the mind but it's two letters apart... And in the context of taking on corpo social media... I dunno. Again, I was primed but that was my immediate assumption. (Though, you know what they say about assumptions.)

  • I'm not American.

Lemmy is much farther left than any of our national discourse.

I get that American parties are farther Right than most but the discourse here is much farther Left than almost all political discourse. Edit: I'm happy to be corrected, show me a serious party in a position of power in a Western democracy committed to ending capitalism!

  • Yeah, this is exactly the childish annoyances and unpleasantness I'm talking about.

  • Not everyone wants to spend social media arguing with people. We have things to do. It's not a particularly pleasant environment sometimes abd believe it or not, that bothers people.

  • Thanks, I'll take a look!

  • Much appreciated!

Yeah, I think .world is the biggest and so I'd love that to be the "base" but even responses here go to "if you ain't against capitalism, I don't want you here."

  • Actually that was my instinctual thought as well. Though, I might be primed as a result of some of the responses.

Just want to make sure you've got the right post.

  • No, it's checkers. The same checkers I played when I bullied my sister as a kid.

    1. Get her angry about something.
    2. she flips out.
    3. mom and dad get mad at her.
    4. success!

    Elon:

    1. Do something you could interpret as a nazi salute.
    2. The Left flips out.
    3. Oxegyn/attention goes to that instead of the evil shit in the executive orders. Plus, most Americans do not seem to think trump is actually going to pull nazi shit (gas chambers, attack the world, remove elections.) So we just look like the same whiners who screamed fascism from 2016-2020 until there was another election (not typically a fascist move.)
    4. Success!

It's not complicated, not brilliant but goddamn are we taking the bait like my 10 year old sister did.

  • Did you notice how more than half of voters voted for trump?

Mainstream America doesn't agree with us on the fascist accusations. Screaming about things with which the majority of voters disagree with us on isn't a recipe for success and makes them less likely to believe us in future.

  • It's almost like it's a perfect distraction for an easily angered Left. Anything to help deflect from the exec orders and pardons and damned if it doesn't work painfully well.

With the added bonus of making the Left sound hysterical so as to make persuadable centrist/moderates less likely to listen when there are real actual harms.

Dude played us like a fiddle.

  • If Lower Decks added multiverses then anything can be canon or not canon according to the viewer's preference! Want a multiverse that's the same but Discovery doesn't exist? Okay, that's the multiverse whatever show is set in until such time as they explicitly bring it up.

    That's how infinite realities work!

  • No, they do it so we talk about it instead of the actually dangerous executive orders etc.

And damn is it working exactly as intended because, like my sister when she was 10, we can't help but take the bait.

  • Yet the memes, jokes and everything that gets through to the non politics junkies was about Elon's salute.

Almost like it was a perfect distraction for people to get enraged by while ignoring the serious issues.

  • I'm waiting for JJ Abrams to wow us all with Babylon 6.

  • The delightful irony is that late last year, Chinese students started doing a big bicycle ride from Zhengzhou to Kaifeng for dumplings. Too many young folks together gets Chinese officials nervous so the authorities shut it down.

So, master of your own time if the party approves of how you spend said time.

  • Oh you lucky duck.

  • Except most people aren't buying second hand, so you're complaining about a non-existent problem.

Edit: As an amazing proof of concept, I'm in a dive bar, saw a pair of gloves in a wicker basket of lost and found and asked about them. The bartender gave them to me, notinf they'd been here for more than a year. These are easily several hundred dollar gloves.

But if things really got to the point where many people were willing to buy second hand, there are in fact ethical brands as well for those who need new. Myself, I buy few things but as much as I can ethical either 2nd hand or from happy factories. (Though, goddamn I cannot find ethical boxers for a semi reasonable price. If you got tips...)

  • Oh, neat! I didn't realize that much like clothes there are ethical internet alternatives. Which do you use?
