  • The goal of Apollo was to make a good app. The goal of the official reddit app is to show you ads and siphon money off you.

    Spot fucking on.

Ever have a good app? Something you like using but it's by a corporation but that's ok, because it's a good app and does what you want? And then they start adding more features to it, and it slows down, and it's more annoying and it keeps offering services you don't want, and it changes and it morphs and it becomes a shit app.

Hell I've watched Whisk become something I liked using to something worthless now it's Samsung food... Switched to using CopyMeThat which actually also gets me recipes from sites that you can't just read the recipes from, and that's ALL it does (well recipe book/shopping cart/meal planning, which is what it's designed for.)

I'm just sick of "How do we make more money" instead of just being an app that does what it says. Gaming is going down the same hole, sadly.

  • Jesus Christ.

Remember when Google's Motto was "Don't be Evil" It was supposed to be a jab at Microsoft, but it feels like every year tech companies find news ways to just be fucking evil.

PS. Google kind of fails to live up to that motto too, I don't even know if it's still an official motto.

  • the authors said the takedown reflects Nvidia's having "admitted" it trained NeMo on the dataset

    Oooh so they're fucked.

THOUGH... let's say I bought a book, why am I not allowed to learn from that book, and write in a similar style to that book. I am? Well why can't I train an AI to use that book and have it write in a similar style? I'm not sold on "I must give you permission to use my book to train an AI." Maybe if I agreed to those terms BEFORE buying the book, but it seems odd that someone can bar me from doing that AFTER buying the book. And just because "we never thought about that" isn't really a good excuse to change the rights for someone who bought the book.

Though if anything this basically proves the old adage. "Don't tell anyone what's in your AI's training data"

  • This is more akin to if you sold a fatty food in a supermarket and someone died from being overweight.

Radicalizing someone to do this isn't a crime. Freedom of speech isn't absolute but unless someone gives them actual orders it would still be protected.

Don't apply UK's lack of freedom of speech in American courts.

  • I wonder if it was "hard" or "I want the Taliban to take over." There's probably a decent amount of people in that area that can fundamentally agree with the Taliban. it's a religious and oppression group. If you're ideologically aligned with the Taliban, and male, you're probably either as good or better of under them.

Not saying this is everything but I imagine there's at least some people who are ok with the new government, mostly because they don't care about others over their own self.

  • It should be VIM

No one comes back from VIM.

Those who say they have are dirty liars... or have it paused in the background.

  • Legally they had been served, so there was nothing they could do about it.

    Somehow I doubt this.

Maybe it's true but legally I know in California you are required to do your briefs in 12 point font. While that's briefs, I would imagine evidence would be under the same banner. It definitely WOULD be illegal to do it in 1 pt font or intentionally making it unreadable. I would imagine if the other side wanted to make it an issue they could back to the judge and he's probably have it out with you.

Maybe the lawyers wisely replaced your malicious compliance with correct sized print with out telling you, maybe the other side didn't care.

  • "This will not be abused" - only fools.

  • "Only 25? That's a steal!"

  • You can deny it, but have you really thought about it.

Think about American Politics. "Well conservatives are just fascists." Sure, I mean there's the party that wants to control what people say, Cancelling them if they ever said anything they don't like. Want to remove all rights from people in specific parties, and mandate how others act at all times... and then there's the republicans which are also clearly fascists.

I'm not trying to say "Republicans are better than Democrats" they're not, they're clearly not. But Democrats aren't that good either. It's a problem with a desire to control others and when one party wins, they should feel they have a mandate to GOVERN but instead there's a feeling they have a mandate to RULE or CONTROL. Luckily most politicians are somewhat sane about this, but god damn, some of the die hards on both sides have lost their mind.

Power corrupts, and Absolute Power corrupts absolutely. That's kind of a fact of being human.

  • You could always do this. But you'd be a damn idiot to antagonize half a potential customer base but ... Well that's one way to run a business.
