  • This is built into some email services, where you with address+label@email.com, you can set the label to whatever you want and it all goes to address@email.com. unfortunately many sites will incorrectly claim that + is invalid in am address.

  • I have a folder with notes about what needs to be done. It's not even 20 things. Can you share your list so I know what I'm missing?

  • The real problem is how do we centralize all communities. I mean, there's a Linux community on lemmy.world, but also Linux Web sites, forums, chat rooms, people on Twitter that post about Linux. Sometimes people talk about Linux in emails, or text messages. They're probably having in person conversations about Linux. This fragmentation is ruining things.

  • I found a single prompt that works for every level except 8. I can't get anywhere with level 8 though.

  • I think the largest group by far isn't listed: people who bought an appliance and didn't care at all that it had WiFi and never connected it their network.

  • It's a a rival of Hardvard.

  • People are giving some advice but it doesn't seem appropriate for an absolute newbie. Here's what I'd say. Absolutely do not run telnet. Because it's so insecure and everyone knows that, it's usually not on by default, and you would have had to start it yourself somehow. It's unlikely that you did that, but you can check to see.

If you're new, you very likely don't need an SSH server running. Unless you're logging into that computer remotely, you don't need it. It's probably not running, but it's conceivable that it could run by default. Check to see and disable it if you don't need remote login.

If you do need remote login, use SSH and use a very good password. Ideally, you'd need to leave newbie territory and use public-private keys instead of a password. It's also not a bad idea to use a nonstandard port, instead of 22. That doesn't beef security much, but many scanners are going to look for 22 and nothing else.

  • I don't understand this comment. Brisk is Lipton.

  • Firefox did this 4 years ago and didn't replace them with an alternative tracking method.

  • This is an article describing someone impersonating an officer and submitting a fake warrant. It's incredible that Verizon fell for it, but what does it have to do with SMS?

  • Rather that individuals setting up or seeking out an instance, I could see institutes whose members produce content using it, but they'd have to really care about avoiding YouTube. Blender foundation is an example, and they have a peer tube instance, but maybe universities, nonprofits, or research institutions.

  • How do you think this works? Yes, Meta will partake in the Fediverse. No one is trying to stop that. That chart won't get to 100% and no one cares if it does. People are just ensuring that there's a place where Meta won't be, and you don't need billions to do that.

  • Are the fish congregating because they see the cameraperson? That looks way too high density.

  • I hear a lot that gas is cheaper for heating and I took that as the truth for a long time. A while ago I did the math though, and for my house is would have been nearly the same annual power bill if I replaced my 90% gas furnace and water heater with electric units. Although the price of gas is far more economical for heating, there's a monthly gas usage fee that's a flat rate. If you go all electric, you don't pay that, and over the course of a year, I didn't heat enough for the lower gas price to offset the flat fees. If instead of a regular electric furnace and water heater, they were heat pumps, electric would have been much cheaper than gas.

This certainly would depend on your local prices and weather and how well your house is insulated, but if you need a new furnace, I'd do the math over a year to see if gas is still the most financially attractive option, especially if you can install an air or ground source heat pump.

  • Sorry, I didn't see the thing about Discord. I'm not going to use that.

  • I check Lemmy about twice a day, work in and foster a collegial environment, and have a background in science. I can't say I would be intensely active, but currently there is less than 1 post per day here, so even a little would lighten the load.
