  • I've tried a few distros recently in my efforts to migrate away from Windows. I landed on Solus https://getso.us/ for my own personal use and I've been very happy with it. I'm a power user of course, but Solus just feels solid to me. No stability issues, no significant driver issues (details below), very easy to work with / low learning curve, no real need for terminal commands or tinkering, and all of the apps that I use on a regular basis are available and easy to install.

They've implemented the KDE Discover app in a recent release to manage packages (they used to only have their own package manager by default). Discover combines their own curated repository of apps that are known/designed to work well with Solus along with Flathub so users have options to install other apps, all from one place. I like the approach since it seems to offer increased stability.

The default Budgie DE is just okay. It's fine, functional, and easy to use, but there are some quirks that I don't love that make it feel a little incomplete in some small ways (i.e. you can't really customize the start menu). I'm personally willing to make the tradeoff for the simplicity that it offers overall. That said, they do offer Plasma, Gnome, and Xfce builds. Plasma was my second favorite and I think it might be a better choice for a newbie.

The only problem I've had with drivers/compatibility on my modern Dell laptop is jumping through some hoops to get the fingerprint reader working and enabling hibernation which really wasn't necessary, just a personal preference.

Another distro that caught my eye that I haven't tested personally yet is ArduinOS https://www.anduinos.com/ . It's another distro that touts a default DE layout reminiscent of Windows to make it easy to switch. However, it is Ubuntu + Gnome based, so take that as you will.

  • And many, many more rely on their jobs not only for income, but also for access to healthcare. Something seems wrong here.

  • Can't have the uppity peasants upending the status-quo, can we?

  • That's the fun thing about Japanese trademark law. If they don't agressively protect tyeir trademarks, they risk losing them.

  • It's like saying an embassy is not US soil. Sure, politically, that might be true, but for all non-political purposes, it very much is within the US.

  • Nobody asked for this! FFS, can megacorps stop shoving AI into everything. Lucky Charms and scissors will have AI soon enough.

  • A tragic death does not redeem an evil life.

  • Hey uhhh... about that... they're planning to occupy just like we did in the middle east.

  • I think there's a reason he finally pumped the breaks on that idea. What would one call the act of one state sending their militia into another state against their express refusal in order to enforce laws without being under control of and indeed acting against the state's elected governor? Man, the words for that activity slip my mind right now.

And remind me why Texans care that much about what's going on 2000 miles away from them? Ask them if their state tax dollars should be going toward sending their militia outside their state borders to clean up someone else's mess.

Things are getting bad. I keep hoping things will cool off, but it's just not the way things are headed, is it?

  • You know what. You've changed my mind. There are lots of reasons. Hate can also be one of them.

  • The problem is that AI halucinates and says things that aren't true with full confidence.

To me, saying "I used AI to answer a question" is no different than saying "I asked my neighbor. He's pretty smart and knows about these things." He might be right 95% of the time but his words should not be treated or repeated as facts without independent verificatfon.

Or put another way, if the top result in your Google search is a reddit post, maybe look at some other sites too.

So to this person stating that they used AI, thank you for being honest. Now we know that your info might need a little more analysis if there's any error or dispute.

I'm not saying that we shouldn't use AI, it's an excellent tool. Just saying that we need to be mindful of what LLMs really are.

  • The only thing I can think of is geolocation for CDNs. Basically to find the geographically closest server based on your location.

  • It doesn't matter. They can convince their supporters of literally anything. And even if they can't, they've been so successful at demonizing dems that their voters would sooner vote for the devil himself so long as he had on a red tie and an (R) next to his name.

  • OOOOHHHHH! So this is what he meant by "drain the swamp!" Maybe he is enacting a campaign promise after all.

  • Not really. They just love power and attention. Vaccines became a populist issue, so they're constructing policy based on that instead of facts and science.

Doing what their misguided base wants keeps them in power. And misguiding their base to pay attention to things other than economic policy makes it so they can use their power to further enrich themselves.

And even when they talk about economic policy, most people don't understand that tariffs are taxes on the American people. And if they don't get that, they definitely don't understand that a trade deficit isn't a bad thing in a post-industrial society because we sell information and services that don't rely on expensive physical resources.

And what kinds of people are fooled by that? The lesser educated. So slash budgets for schools and universities, especially those that are prominent and lean left. And slashing those budgets has already led to very significant setbacks in research of new treatments for a wide variety of ailments.

But hey, at least that money is going to... hey, what are they gonna spend all that money on now that the government is no longer paying?

Anyway, what I'm getting at is they don't hate us. They are using us as pawns. They are depraved and indifferent to our suffering so long as they get more money and power.

  • My favorite is when the sites just block access to IPs in those states instead of trying to comply with the laws with a message that says "Your state won't let us do business and we refuse to violate your privacy." VPNs gonna see a huge spike in purchases, and lots of angry gooners gonna start writing their representatives as their favorites sites drop off one by one.

  • To quote dear leader who is most definitely implicated and ran his campaign on releasing the Epstein files, "Are we still talking about Epstein!?"

  • And nobody with the power to hold them accountable does either.

  • Your last point is of critical importance. The populace as a whole is outgunned. Psuedo-militarized police forces and "law enforcement" organizations have us outgunned. Nobody's going out shooing unless they have nothing to lose. And right now, just about everyone still has something to lose. The goal is to keep the population comfortable enough not to riot on the streets.

There's a reason they're targeting the peaceful working class brown people who have families and still have hope that somehow the system will work and they'll be returned to their family. Notice how they're not rolling into the ghettos and trying to clean up the latino gangs where immigrants are definitely hiding. These ICE agents are cowards and bullies who pick on the weak to make themselves feel better.
