  • Okay, thanks for explaining.

As has happened before, I'm frankly a bit grouchy upon criticism of my AI-aided content. I do feel the post as it stands is relevant to this sub, as it's based on a real phenomenon (the definition of a group of owls) applied to a famous place which bears that definition, and then populated by the actual subjects of this sublemmy. In short, it's a simple joke / riddle combining those different elements.

I came up with this idea myself and I wrangled ChatGPT until it came up with the final image I was (more or less) pleased with. Otherwise, if my health wasn't so shitty, I might have taken the time and effort to do a watercolor on the concept, but realistically that's not possible anymore. Cheers.

  • This is really the zinger you finally settled on after all that?

Hah, I think it was moreso my catching myself and changing course. If an apology is in order, then I hereby offer it.

The problem on my end is that I like contributing where I can (on top of running my community) but am almost always working through a level of pain & fatigue, having a pretty much fatal disease in CFS/ME.

Admittedly, I have a short fuse when it comes to what I perceive as low-effort critique, even if it's just me mistaking the situation and replying inappropriately. I'm generally at the end of my rope at that point, and should undoubtedly be doing something else, even if it's just to ignore replies(!)

I've also been stung like this before when contributing occasional AI-aided content. A common thing seems to be people assuming I put zero creativity or effort in to coaxing out something which I thought was fairly amusing after my work and final edits. [for example]

OTOH, this has been about my sixth post across about two months in this particular sublemmy, and all have gone well so far until this one, which perhaps did slightly-less-well. "Anon6789" has been going above and beyond, and seeing that, I've wanted to help out when I can.

  • the sheltering and the big disaster

    Okay, I'm listening!

  • Nope, not me. Check my history to see my business...

  • it’s just sad to see something that looks so grotesque in a community otherwise devoted to nature photography and an appreciation of these beautiful animals.

Right mate, but WHAT EXACTLY sheltered world do you live in, in which a terrible disaster happens 'pon a wayward, funny owl post, eh?

  • For sure! But the only reason I prodded the AI forward in such a way was to produce a silly joke. For a silly reason. For a well-known reason!

    Or not...?

  • Now would you even say... legislative...?

  • Powlament?

    Ooh, ooh!

  • Hey, thanks again. ^^

Hmm, I suppose I should consider uploading somewhere to LW when I want to do more 'image roundup' posts. Indeed, I'm still pondering what to do in the wake of Imgur casually wiping a bunch of my posts as recently as 6mos ago.

Like you, I'm largely a 'one-man show,' and don't have nearly the time and energy to be reconstructing ~200 posts that were once Imgur-hosted. :S

  • Ah, nice! That tool looks real good, with some fairly hefty file-size throughputs. Maybe I can find a use for it, one day.

Btw, are you happy with your upscale tools? I typically use http://waifu2x.udp.jp/ or BigJpg.com, but sometimes better AI is called for.

I think there is a 15 or 20MB limit for uploads on World

Holy moly, that seems like a lot for uploaded files for a big, popular instance. oO Over here, my instance has something like 10 servers and a US$200/mo bill, but only accepts uploads to 500k, and not only that, but they seem to display a bit pokily.

  • I'm coming up on 1,000 subscribers, 500 posts, and 1.5+yrs of content creation in my bandes dessinées sublemmy, with myself being responsible for maybe 85-90% of total content creation. Your concerns are real and valid IMO.

Soon I plan to set up a bot to post small, 'drip-like' content every other day, supplementing the off-days with my beefier content, which are generally small reviews and content roundups. I guess my point is that it's good to keep trying different techniques out, asking this and other communities for ideas, and having requisite patience.

Also, I think light-handed advertising across various platforms probably helps. Imgur and Reddit have worked okay so far, but frankly I need someone to help with other social media joints. That's something an active mod could potentially help with...

  • Not only is that adorable, but it's also impressive because of 1) the cool facts shared, 2) the sheer vigor & activity of Newton, and 3) I had no idea Webp's could be animated. Like, wow!

  • Psycho KillerQu'est-ce que c'est?Fuuh-fuuh-fuuh-fuuh, fuuh-fuuh-fuuh-fuuh-fuuh-fuuh!

Note: pardon me, I'm just an idiot passing by, but ever since I learned how to pronounce "phở," that line keeps coming back to me. Btw, looks delish!

  • Seems like all the high-visibility, internet-focused corporations are rushing forward to bend the knee.

I guess it would be pretty interesting to see one of them do the opposite. As in, how easily and quickly would the exec and other branches be able to attack them, maybe even to destroy them?

  • Wow, very wow.

It's both pleasant in terms of palette, technique, and light & shadow interplay, yet strikingly depressing in terms of subject matter and claustrophobic nature.

    1. GOOD: Someone recommended to me the other day an automated posting aid, which would be an enormous help in my being able to "drip" daily content to my sublemmy via a bot, leaving me space and time to work on longer-form posts.
    2. BAD: A week or two ago I realised that Imgur had been dropping my content over a surprisingly short delay period (~six months), breaking likely the majority of older posts. I think I'll slowly be able to restore at least the lead images, but with something like 400 posts to get to, it's going to be a PITA, and going to take time, daggit.
    3. GOOD: Lemm.ee's issues with not accepting image uploads (I and others still have no idea why, given that our host admin has pretty much retired from interacting with the users) have been thankfully easing off lately, allowing me to work on stuff like recovering from step 2 and restoring some whole posts here and there.
    4. BAD: Restoring multiple images posts is... ugh, going to be a real slog that will probably never get done properly. First, because somehow I seem to have misplaced a certain amount of the original image content, second, because it takes a lot more time than simply restorying a post's lead image, and third, because lemme.ee only accepts up to 500k images (and bless 'em simply for that!), which unfortunately isn't always up to displaying full pages properly.
    5. GOOD: There have been a few user posts recently, which is always nice to see, and gives me hope that maybe just maybe the sublemmy can be self-sustaining one day. 🙂
