  • why did the U.S. invade Iraq when Venezuela is so close?

2/3 of Venezuela's reserves were discovered/confirmed in the last 20 years.

20 years ago, Venezuela was one of the U.S.'s biggest oil suppliers. 10ish years ago the oil price crashed and sent Venezuela spiralling into chaos. Trump has been grinding them down since then (mostly through sanctions). Biden let them breathe for 4 years.

Is that what's going to happen soon?

Ummm, yeah. You think they're posturing over drugs? Trump doesn't care if the poors die of drug overdoses. He wants that sweet, sweet crude and has been gearing up to pacify invade Venezuela to get it. That's why he wants Ukraine to surrender. He needs Russia to cool its jets so that Europe/NATO doesn't drag the U.S. into a war over there. Troops will be on the ground in Venezuela soon, after an indiscriminate blitzkrieg bombing campaign for a few weeks - they will say they're bombing gangs/cartels. It should start any day now since he "closed the air space" over Venezuela. He's just waiting for Venezuela to launch one of its fighters (or for Ukraine to capitulate) and the game is on. This is all ramping up because the CIA has failed to eliminate Maduro and install a new leader.

I wouldn't be surprised if Trump ultimately hopes to take over the whole country and rename it.

  • I mean if you had a full data set of known allergies and millions of DNA of people that have and don't have allergies, you may find a genetic correlation of people susceptible. But there's too many environmental factors that would alter that anyway.

Wasn't there a huge announcement this year about exposure to allergens at a (very) young age preventing allergies? That would suggest genetics is a very small part of it and environmental factors being much more important.

However, checking hair samples doesn't necessarily mean checking DNA. They could be checking for certain markers like antibodies your body produces. Still sounds like bunk science or it would be much bigger though.

  • I don't believe this one. Links, or it didn't happen.

  • There are places where this is common. They hope to get paid (I assume to get them to leave). Sometimes they're accompanied by pick-pockets who pray on the distracted.

  • Fuck yeah, I'll raise a glass of spider-venom-laced-pumpkin-juice to that!

  • I'm so frustrated that this article, and many other sources - including news programs, are not talking about the lack of alarms in the buildings. I agree that the materials and density were terrible and created a catastrophic situation for the structures, but the lack of alarms to alert residents is absolutely ridiculous and is what made this such a huge tragedy for the people who died.

If the buildings' alarms aren't working, then they should be on "fire watch" with 24/7 personnel ready to alert people on every floor where the alarm isn't working. Does that cost too much? Then fix the fucking alarms as a top priority. This is especially true when there are no automatic sprinklers, which sounds like is often the case in Hong Kong.

There are reports that people were getting calls from their friends and relatives and that's how they learned about the fire. People were waking up to the smell of smoke without an alarm going off. WTF. That's so far beyond acceptable, I don't know what else to say.

I travel a lot and I always bring my own smoke and CO detector with me. This is an example of why.

  • The federal libs need to stop making deals with Alberta cons. No matter what you do, you won't get their vote or support, so stop kowtowing to them and ruining the rest of the country and world in the process for fucks sake.

  • Have you tried tracking the web traffic directly on your phone to know for sure what app is accessing that site?

  • Yeah flights that cheap don't exist in Canada. You haven't even covered the airport fees at that price.

  • I hope every one knows this is a myth and that the tail of an earthworm won't grow into a new worm when it is cut off. It may writhe for a bit, but will soon die.

  • From other articles, it looks like they get paid to take away waste, but instead of taking it somewhere proper that costs money, they dump it illegally. They may have even purchased the land at auction for this purpose. Also, it seems like agencies have been involved since July and they failed to properly shut it down. Ouch.

I saw one estimate that they made £500k through this scheme and an estimate that it will cost £26m to clean up.

Apparently there is more garbage that is buried at the site, and some sections of the pile are heating up and may spontaneously combust, adding a whole new issue to this mess.

  • But it's unreasonable to expect drivers to crowd the far right lane all the time, making merging/exiting the highway more congested and dangerous just because I only drive 0-9 mph over the speed limit at the speed of traffic flow...

So what do you do when there are two lanes? Ride the left lane? No? But then how do people possibly merge? Huh, somehow it works. Shockingly, you can move to the other lane when someone needs to merge because, whoa you guessed it, the lane isn't full of people going slower.

It's not unreasonable, and there's a reason why it's the (sadly often unenforced) rule almost everywhere to keep right/left. Somehow it works in Germany where it is more heavily enforced. Oh, and guess what, it's safer for everyone.

This is totally psychological (thinking it's crowding the right lane and causing merge issues). You may not realize it, but you're doing this just because you unconsciously feel more comfortable with more space (for yourself) on both sides. It's called the "space cushion". You might even tell yourself you are safer because you have more directions to escape to if a situation arises. Or you might just be lazy, as it's a lot easier to sit in your cushy middle lane and not have to think about what you're doing.

But you're actually creating more problems by riding the middle lane, leading to people passing on both sides, doing more dangerous weaving maneuvers, reducing the optimal flow of traffic overall, and making the road less safe for everyone. And did you know you're probably making merging worse? Yeah, the fact that you think you don't have to change lanes to assist with people merging just because you're in the middle lane means that you're part of the problem. You still have to pay attention and be ready to move over, in case there is already someone in the right lane who needs to move over.

It's pretty selfish to be honest. Stop being a lane hog.
