  • I completely agree: if the (hypothetical) perfect LLM wrote the perfect book/song/poem, why would I care?

Off the top of my head, if an LLM generated Lennon's "Imagine", Pink Floyd's "Goodbye Blue Skies", or Eminem's "Kim", why would anyone give a fuck? If it wrote about sorrow, fear, hope, anger, or a better tomorrow, how could it matter?

Even if it found the statistically perfect words to make you laugh, cry, or feel something in general, I don't think it would matter. When I listen to Nirvana, The Doors, half my collection honestly, I think it is inherently about sharing a brief connection with the artist, taking a glimpse into their feelings, often rooted in a specific period in time.

Sorry if iam14andthisisdeep, I don't think I am quite finding the right words myself. But I'll fuck myself with razor blades before I ask a predictive text model to formulate it for me, because the whole point is to tell you how I feel.

  • I still feel this whole conclusion is akin to "we won't need money in a post-AGI world". An implied, unproven dream of AI being so good that X happens as a result.

If an author uses LLMs to write a book, I don't give a fuck that they forget how to write on their own. What I do care about is that they will generate 100 terrible books in the time it takes a legitimate author to write a single one, consuming a 1000 times the resources to do so and drown out the legitimate author in the end, by sheer mass.

  • I mean, 40% of the population biking to work is nothing to sneeze at, compared to the US's 6-or-so %

  • "OK, Mr president, that's great, now please hand me the - no, no! Ugh...""THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER"

  • I might be biased by the question but I spontaneously thought of "pistolet à clous" as the most common term (which indeed translates to nail gun).I agree with your other examples though, saying "staple gun" would be weird in french

  • The future is now. The future is also ten, twenty and thirty years ago! According to GitHub's Chief Executive Idiot himself:

the skills that will matter most include system design, AI fluency, delegation, and quality assurance

Except for "AI fluency", this has been true for fucking ever. No serious work environment evaluates their developers on how quickly they can vomit code (or so I hope): the job is indeed about design, quality and working as a team in general.Which means a tool that does not help with any of these is already not a revolution. When the tool actively makes quality worse and collaboration more complicated, I get the impression it is actually detrimental.

Mind you, I might be dead wrong. I am personally not impressed so far. It seems to be a better autocomplete, but I don't want to throw a glass of water out the window every time I press tab.

  • but at least Abilene was insured against such an attack

Oh, well that's great. I hope the people, whose identity, medical records, or whatever else was stolen will be compensated accordingly. Would be a shame if the money went into building a new, just as unsafe system.

Not that anyone gives a fuck. At this point the argument is "your data had probably already been stolen somewhere else"...

  • I say we carry on as usual and deport them anyway

  • I honestly would never have guessed!

  • There is the expected amount of negativity in the comments, but also more positivity than I expected.

I watched the video. I am not really a fan of the style, I don't agree with all of the content. But damn, a big influencer is using his reach to talk about retaking privacy and control in your online life. It can be such a difficult subject to pitch without sounding crazy. I think the video existing is great and pushes general awareness in the right direction.

  • He looks mighty happy to see us

  • Scardina says he voted for Trump and still supports many of the former president’s policies, but this isn’t what he signed up for. “Buyer’s remorse? I don’t know, a little bit,” he said.

Maybe a little bit. I mean, that detention and deportation stuff might be just a touch heavy handed. One of these roofers had a little girl! I think. Oh well. Trump must have a plan or something.I am trying to make it satire, but I don't think I am managing...

  • God damn, I managed to eat an onion on a /c/nottheonion comment... I rushed over the article to find where that quote was from, only to feel dumber and dumber as it dawned on me that it is, in fact, way past bedtime.

  • Decitrillionaire

  • Think "free" as in "free audiobooks", not "free speech"

  • Oh yeah, little Bobby 3d we call him

  • I don't usually go "in my country it's different", but that affirmation is absolutely wild to me.

Guessing this is US-centric, but you are saying if you recklessly drive away from an officer stopping you, they are likely to give chase and potentially open fire ?? What ?? Would the chase not be more dangerous than whatever you are being fined for ? Would them opening fire not make the whole (armed) country you are living in more likely to shoot back ? Are you guys playing cops & robbers IRL ? Sheriffs & bandits ? What is this about ?

Where I'm from the cop has already written your registration plate down, and possibly got your id. The last panel of this meme would be "well no one is stopping you, but it's going to become a lot more expensive". "Also I really don't care enough to chase you or anything, my lunch break is in 20 minutes". "Btw I am not allowed to carry a weapon when handling traffic".

Not saying there aren't assholes that will waste your time with a more tedious procedure than necessary, but nobody is going to chase, and nobody is going to shoot...

  • I finally switched to Linux as my daily driver (gaming, browsing, watching stuff) a week ago. Admittedly I have been using it at work for a few years.

    • I chose Pop!_OS as a distribution, because it supposedly streamlines nvidia driver hassles and I wanted to give it a try
    • Installed the OS, Discord, Steam, no problems
    • Installed and played Raft, Vampire Survivors, TW Warhammer 3, Outer Wilds, no problems and no additional config needed

Just to add a voice to the positive feedback! If you have a spare computer or hard drive, I absolutely encourage you to try it out!
