  • Been going through Behind the Bastards and I enjoy it a lot. I started from the beginning which was excellent for understanding some of the memes and ongoing jokes.

I skip the “It Could Happen Here” episodes personally because they are very long and tend to bring me down, but they’re also really good and they really highlight the vulnerabilities of contemporary systems of government.

  • Another reminder that many democrats are still conservative garbage.

  • I’m unsure what the message is here too. Is it “work together to minimize required work efforts” or just “straight up everyone stop working”? Why is workers uniting implied to be bad here? I understand stop working for striking purposes like nurses striking for better pay/working conditions, but I fundamentally disagree if the goal is get nurses to stop working on treating the sick for no other purpose than work sucks.

The moniker Antiwork is not very clear sometimes where the movement stands.

  • In the US people like that use guns, because they’re so easily accessible. Elsewhere people use other weapons, notably a sword in this case. Banning the weapon is unlikely to stop the next rando attack.

Opportunities like subsidized state mental health services and meeting someone’s basic human needs goes a long way in stopping someone from despairing so much that they attack randos on the street.

Tories are groß capitalists who don’t care to have those needs met for anyone but themselves

  • “Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the incident was “shocking,” adding: “Such violence has no place on our streets.“

A truly worthless statement from someone with actual power to make changes that would make people less inclined to commit public attacks. I’m presuming this guy lashed out from despair because of his surroundings, possibly economic pressures that Sunak and the Tory ghouls continue to make worse for everyone.

  • So this article mentions this Indiana dude as an anecdote and then talks about Reuters discussing this with experts who then tell them whatever data they do have (which they don’t share in the article?) is too small to make any conclusions from.

This article seems bad. What’s the mechanism of erosion that solar farms threaten? Construction seemed to be their only explanation, but that’s not exclusive to solar farm. This almost reads like environmentalism fearmongering

  • I had a feeling it was mostly bad reporting. I appreciate you confirming it.

  • Who is researching this topic without losing sleep, and who reports on this crap in such a blasé manner lol.

  • I’m replying to your edit: the link you gave concluded with “questionable” which explicitly stated part of that determination was from pro-Israel advocacy groups while also stating they did not fact check this source.

For a site based on combating bias that’s pretty ironic.

Again I appreciate the credibility check, but this particular instance demonstrated to me that MBFC isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

  • “Overall, we rate Mondoweiss as Left Biased and Questionable due to the blending of opinion with news, the promotion of pro-Palestinian and anti-zionist propaganda, occasional reliance on poor sources, and hate group designation by third-party pro-Israel advocates. (D. Van Zandt 3/4/2017) Updated (12/07/2023)“

Gonna be honest here, kinda disappointed in mediabiasfactcheck for using the “hate group designation by third-party pro-Israel advocates“ as a measure of credibility while also stating they don’t fact check this source. Brings down my view of them which sucks cause I liked them.

I appreciate Darkthoughts for linking the credibility measure for discussion though. More posts need that.

  • It only took the consequences of their actions for 10+ years to weaken their support. Doing real well over there UK.

  • It’s a bad answer to the existential question of death

  • Agreed. I find the people in my life who blindly support Israel know nothing of the history of Zionism prior to 1948 and think Palestine was given to Israel just because of the holocaust, almost universally omitting that there were already people there and the responsibility of all western governments (I’m considering Russia “west” here) in the oppression of Jews in the years leading up to, and after, the holocaust.

The Behind the Bastards episode on Bibi Netanyahu talked about how he really got his start in the US as a lobbyist for the state of Israel and the media blitz Israel utilized to get both American parties to unconditionally support Israel. Most Americans are just propagandized af.

  • If they know what they’re doing and we know what they’re doing, but we actually do nothing to stop it before it come to a head, how much are we culpable for the outcome? This goes for Russians, Chinese, and Americans.

All that to say, I’m not gung-ho about ramping up war productions just yet

  • The article mentions the US warned of an imminent attack last month and the Russian state dismissed it. Russia also has a history of utilizing false flag operations to start shit, so I’m leaning towards that atm (before more details come out)

  • I agree with the other guy. The media made sound bytes of Trump during his first presidential run because it was popular and directly contributed to him winning, which is now a problem for all of us.

My skepticism arises from similar articles saying the same thing about Russia, though those had more analysis about the transition to a wartime economy, that come at the same time as this article.

I’m concerned media article like this are primers for accepting conflicts down the line as there seems to be a looming threat of greater conflict that’s being highlighted here. I’m an advocate of working together and see war as an incredibly stupid objective so part of this may be just not wanting to believe humans are this stupid.

  • How much is this fearmongering to justify increased military spending and how much is this true? This is the second article I’ve seen in 2 days about “unprecedented” military buildup in Russia and China.

War is fucking stupid. Anyone who wants war is fucking stupid. China and Russia’s autocrats are evil stupid, but are they stupid enough to create another great conflict that we all have to suffer through? Why the sudden change now? Russia tried the quick takeover and that’s failed miserably, drawing them into a prolonged conflict with high casualties.

With all that said, I also recognize the US is a declining world power (from the absolute top to now in competition with others) and stories like this are excellent for drumming up movements to try and maintain that absolute power position.

So how much is this article (and other recent ones) US propaganda?

  • This NPR article really talked around that detail. It was boring af and ended abruptly.

  • What about all republicans that have public office right now?
