I mean no harm.

  • If a friend or familiar is not okay talking about a subject, or clashes horribly with you in the topic, just give the silence hint and find something else to talk about. But if this keeps hapening or he/she doesn't take the hint my suggestion is to soft ghost the person to avoid leaving a bad taste.

  • There are no "safe levels of lead", it's toxic as-is and bio-accumulates in the body, which is the main problem. It also doesn't matter in what chemical-compound or what route the lead comes in, it's still toxic as a heavy element.

Why is everything laced with lead then? Well, it's fantastically useful and cheap element, with wide applications... Paint, pipes, bullets, leaded petrol (the absolute worst incident), batteries, radiation-shielding, it was/is on everything. It's entirely a man-made problem.

Except modern day reality is that if we keep using it we'll all die or at least become dummer. This cost is obviously greater than banning/avoiding all uses of lead in the first place. In the science circles they are betting if a some new magic material contains lead, it'll never (or is allowed to) exit the lab.

  • The NT kernel in isolation is apparently quite "ok", from what i have heard of it. It's the spyware, malware, driver crap ("windows") running on/using it which is unquestionably totally fucked and disgusting. If they were to FOSS the NT kernel, I could maybe support an such endeavor.

  • I have noticed a lot of (youtube) people are keenly aware of their faults. Admitting you have a thing to try improve up on, is an triple up that I can unfortunately only give as 1/3 of a triple agree. If you know you are butchering grammar/spelling, giving a pre-warning is only going to make it funny.

  • Go on, now go to nearest nuke power plant and offer free hot tea and cheerful comments. (based, maybe a hint of /s)

edit: Downvoters that apparently didn't quite get what I meant; I'm cheerful for any nuclear power workers that doing a good job. /s was because this would be the opposite of what happended. Well, anyway...

  • I have learnt coffee oxidizes quite fast giving that horrible burnt taste, which even milk won't hide. The longer it has been in a open-to-air-pot, the worse the taste gets. Storing in an air-tight container (thermos) it stays "ok" for days. So actually, I think all such servings from the coffee shops are thus inherently worse than brewing your own coffee.

(There are no starbucks in my country, but I think McDonald's coffee really is somehow heated past 100*C and it's the first sip away to burn your mouth, so you wouldn't taste it anyway.)

  • René Rebe, I'll watch him blast about bad code occasionally.

  • They are 10y behind, I discovered thinking while 12y old and have been igoring it for 20y. Comes handy in a pinch, leaving all others mindblown.

  • Bookmarking doesn't work for me, too limited, and starts a horrible trend of duplicating them. So they are useless for tab history managment. Also, the linear tab history is not very useful... same problem, the entries get duped eventually. I often don't want to restore the tabs from the last day whatever, but restore an specific set of tabs. Some times even multiple sets, and switch between these.

I really would like an Firefox feature, where the tabs would be part of a "tab history tree". Opening a link in a tab would add it as a "sub-tab" of the parent tab. In history.

So when a doing a search or refining one many times, this would end-up linking all the opened tabs to the originating tab. A new tree of tabs could be started by just opening an empty tab, and a "tab organizer UI" should allow to move/group that into an existing tab tree if needed. (The tab-bar UI doesn't need to visualize the tree-of-tabs. The tabs would be just auto-organized this way in the history)

I think this would allow to clear all of the currently open tabs in any window, but the tabs could still be neatly restored from the history on per-tree basis in any window. Restoring a tab-tree would allow to continue making refinements to it, or clone it. Currently multi-window tab restoring in FF is kinda borked, and only the last window's open tabs are restored automatically.

  • I was going talk about /dev/null accounts (i.e. the accounts you have long long have forgotten you created) and steer the discussion on this. (But no, psytrance is much more interesting. /s)

  • The https://ektoplazm.com/ is still up, though with archive mode and a rate-limit. Please clone it. One day I'll start a process that I'll not regret, while I/you can.

I have a puny 30GiB slice of it, and it's the best thing that I have. All for free. Non-pirated. (the owner has reported the total space consumed is multiple a 1TB)

Btw, Infected is making a gig in my town. And I'm struck with disbelief of the absurdity of it. Here? no way. Bust a move will be my vain. If I could inhale it I would.

  • You can't exceed lightspeed. Current tech is already at 99%

  • Even the newest "64-bit" cpus are really just 48-bit (or 36-bit on low end) or if bleeding edge 56-bit physical adressing processors. This is the maximum amount of virtual memory a process can have access to. You could memory map all your hard disks an still have room to map more physical memory to VMA.

  • A dum question: if both candidates are unable to function, then what happens? (Trump for his crimes, Biden for getting dementia...)

Meanwhile in Finland: the Finnish version of "build the wall":

Parliament's Administrative Committee will not resume its discussion of the Refoulement Act until after the weekend. The committee is still so far behind schedule that it could not complete its work today. The debate on the bill continued during the committee meeting, which started at 5 p.m. but ended quickly. Peltokangas says there was no drama at the meeting. yle.fi

The bill needs 5/6 parliamentary approval and politicians are already sweating over it because it touches too many international treaties + constitution. Debate is mostly: is it ready yet? is it ready yet? is it ready yet? (While the committees checking the bill are getting more uneasy by the bill's content...)

Also you got link text and url backwards.

    Oops, fixed.

  • I wish lemmy communties existed for:

      • How are you doing today?
      • Did you discover anything new to your consciousnesses today?
      • I fucke'ed today. Here is how.

Edit: yeah, I think I miss a few of the old subreddit's. Even if there is an equivalent in lemmy, such communities are quite silent.
