  • You are correct, every source of media has a bias. To expand upon your comment. Whenever we are consuming media and in particular news that sould always be in our minds. Who's is sponsoring this, what is trying to be accomplished by this piece?

    Al Jazeera has a stronger bias than most but considering that it's essentially state media they are a lot more objective than I expect they would be. It's not a trash news source but it definitely takes more scrutiny than say DW news.

  • Couldn't agree more! Capitalism sucks! Also to add on to that, artist haven't come to many consensies about generative AI. The only one I think everyone can agree on is that it'll be disruptive, and makes the future for people who earn a living creating art even more uncertain than it already was. Whether that future is good or bad is entirely up for debate, although I think it'll land somewhere in the middle. Regardless of any of that, Pandora's box is open and it can't be closed.

  • Absolutely, but they weren't arraigned as far as the article suggests. Also the language of the article is really suggestive. Intolerance can not be tolerated, and perhaps the police coming around to have a chat with intolerant people is a good thing. It's concerning it happened but yeah, doubtful that's the full story.

  • Protecting creative jobs is extremely important, full stop. AI generation is a destabilizing development, I don't want to see it locked up in walled gardens or thrown away though. What I hope to see is a new generation of artists pushing the boundaries with open source AI tools. Yeah a lot of that's going to be bespoke porn... What am I even saying...?

    We're just apes with fancy tools afterall. The same things were said about photoshop and digital art. We'll be fine, just get stocked up with some brain bleach.

  • The only reason I don't completely despise Windows is because it, along with Mac OS, has made computing available for the masses. The average person doesn't have the time to learn how to use a computer. They just want to use it. That in my subjective opinion is a good thing. A very strong, and valid argument could be made that it's a faustian bargain, probably because it is.

  • My first job right out of college I was writing assembly for some epically old industrial equipment. That shit runs on its own language that was only ever used on that piece of equipment. Usually x86 but with some wacky modifications. There's no compiler for that, just a manual the size of a textbook and a million chicken scratch notes in it that's half covered in grease. I'm so glad I don't do that anymore.

  • Seen it too many times. The biggest guy on the team grabs the biggest wrench he can find for the smallest fastener on the assembly. Maybe the wrench bends, maybe the head snaps, I've seriously considered getting torque limited Allan wrenches.

  • Part of me wishes I still had my families old 386 or commodore knock-off. Read some of the terrible short stories I wrote, play tanks. I remember when my Mom's friend came over with a stack of 51/4 floppies and installed a program that played the Loonie Toons theme song with their logo and Buggs Bunny captioned saying "That's all folks." It blew my mind, video (sort of) on a computer, how was that even possible. I wondered how they got it to connect to the cable cause no way a computer could do that. Dang I'm getting old lol.

  • I have to explain to my aunt how to navigate to her external hard drive every time she plugs it in to see or save her pictures. That's with autoplay. Asking her to click on a script I set up to mount it and click the shortcut to that mount point. No way, it would take 45 minutes on the phone every time. I'm telling her to buy the extended support, cause I'm not going through upgrading her computer again. As long as that malware riddled cesspool stays exactly the same she can use it. Some people are just very bad with technology.

  • Not a biologist but have to understand some biology and my understanding is that the current consensus is that most of that junk DNA isn't actually junk and serves some purpose. We just have a very poor understanding of what that is or how it works.

  • Thank you for your recommendation. I've looked at some of those SoCs and they're impressive but none of them do what I'm looking for. I want to make a graveyard for my old GPUs, but without the power overhead I have right now with them configured as essentially a mining rig that's folding proteins instead of guessing the hash. I understand that the potential power saved by using ARM or RISC over x86/64 is a few dozen watts at best and chosing an SoC over a desktop platform hamstrings any opportunity for scaling, but it's been a dream project of mine for quite some time. It doesn't have to be practical.

    Whenever I am doing different projects I go with RasPi alternatives. I agree they're cheaper and superior.

  • Is there a RasPi alternative that's competitive in price and has PCI-e support? It's been a dream project of mine for quite some time to pair an ultra low power SoC to a GPU in order to make a crazy overpowered Folding@Home or BOINC cluster.

  • I think people misunderstand this and that you explained it well. It wasn't a court that struck down the video, it was YouTube. I'm not sure though what American law has to say about monolithic platforms like YouTube and hosting public domain content.

  • You're absolutely right, stats are a very misunderstood subject. It's difficult to contextualize stats like this when the population is so large. My measurement for when I got old was when I started to meet old friends and at some point in the conversation we begin talking about other friends who we both knew who've passed away since the last time we've talked.
