  • 50501 is a national protest movement here in the US. There is an individual chapter for every state. The chapter for my state has a ton of people involved in my city, and one of the things we're doing is fostering community through events like block parties.

Block parties are not "unsanctioned" lol

I don't know if they're a thing in other countries, but here in the US, it's become an official type of event. We work with the city, and close down streets to set up on the pavement, temporarily converting the road into a social space for everyone around. Local businesses come and do stalls, food trucks set up, local musicians perform, it's great!

  • If your community is poorly connected, help out! Host a block party, set up a book swap, there's all kinds of options. That's a big focus of our local 50501 community in Michigan: restoring the bonds that have been worn away over the years by capitalists.

I strongly disagree with the majority of your last post though. It sounds like you're determined to close your eyes and ears to the people around you

  • I think Tuvok probably had security clearances that might have been problematic to duplicate. Not that that would stop Janeway. I think it just means Tuvix would end up joining Section 31 after they get back to Earth

  • We have been trying to reach you about your law's extended warranty

  • This is the second, and more promising, time chemicals associated with life have been detected in the planet's atmosphere by Nasa's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).

I thought I'd remembered reading about this before. Sounds like just a couple more years, and they'll be sure this gas is there, which is huge, but not totally conclusive.

Personally, I'd bet it's life. A big rocky planet with an ocean of phytoplankton sounds like our best bet for finding it. The scientists in the article are trying really hard not to be excited

  • The solution is obviously creating dire sloths

  • ...doesn't it usually imply...something you have in common?

Yes. That you live in the same area. You have the same elected representatives, you use the same public services, you shop at the same stores, you live with the same stakes. That's why people say you need to get involved in your community. Whether or not you acknowledge it, you're part of it

Edit: to add, "community center" probably sounds old-fashioned to you, because of what they were talking about:

it's hard to get anyone to be willing to be remotely friendly or willing to admit that they are destroying the social fabric of their own Communities.

Getting rid of places where you can engage with your community has been part of this effort. Community centers are run by local governments, and are often one of the first things conservatives try to cut

  • Yoooo!! Finally!!! I remember seeing the scars on a whale from their hooks as a kid, and being amazed that something like that could exist. Finding out no one had ever seen one alive devastated little 2nd grade me lol

  • Interesting. Well, community is a common word lol

It's usually used to refer, non-specifically, to people that live around you. You'll see it in places like "community gardens" or "community centers". The usage on the Internet is pretty recent, linguistically, obviously lol

  • The report said Musk sent Fong a direct message asking if she wanted to have his baby despite never having met her in person. Fong confided in friends about the advance, and once Musk found out, he unfollowed her, and her X earnings reportedly nosedived. At the peak of Musk's engagement with her posting, she apparently raked in $21,000 over a two-week stretch on his platform.

    Coercion is rape.

  • So glad they decided to use this, rather than the Internet connection that came with the White House

  • As long as the Clown episode doesn't come on 😨

  • I like the idea that they're not just symbols, but shapes. Get anything to be shaped like a rune, and it'll touch magic. So two rocks leaned against each other just right might create a trickle of water, or a tree that grows a twisted enough web of branches could, by chance, summon a flame. Then, like with all natural phenomenon, people figured it out! It fits well with the trope that wizards are arcane researchers and scientists, you find in settings like D&D's

  • For example i know a few people who buy places and fix them up to rent out. Are you saying they should get their properties taken away?

Treating housing as a commodity is part of the problem for sure. I believe all humans have a right to safe shelter. No one's income should come before another person's life.

    That said,

If you're only referring to billionaires and corporations buying housing, i agree.

This would be the practical way to do it anyway. Some guy that rents out a ski chalet isn't commiting some terrible crime. It's charging people to live in their own homes that's wrong.

  • Billups no! Stay away from that Horga'hn!

  • This is part of the myth of scarcity. There is currently already enough housing for everyone. It's capitalism that's keeping people out of it.

Many of these places have been left to rot by landlords that would rather let them sit empty than charge an affordable rent, or perform necessary maintenance. A big part of housing everyone would be using reallocated resources to refurbish dilapidated properties. That's why we want to tax the rich
