I'm beautiful and tough like a diamond...or beef jerky in a ball gown.

  • I saw that one in the feed, but like the technology communities, it seemed more "in the news" in tone. But the !offgrid@slrpnk.net community linked in its sidebar might be appropriate.

  • From what I gathered, these would basically have been used as a last resort when the only other option is dying in space. Given the choice....I'd flip a coin I guess? lol

  • Looking at the cast I recognized from 30 Rock and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, I pretty much assumed this was a Carlock/Fey product and IMDB confirms.

    Will definitely check this out.

  • According to the support ticket I put in last week when I saw the first post about this, the bootloader will be unlockable. Or, at least that's what they said. So here's hoping we see nice debloated/de-googled ROMs.

At the very least, it should be immediately rootable with Magisk.

  • Nope, sorry. Sally Jessy Raphael is the only person allowed to wear those glasses.

  • Honestly, I'm surprised. Was expecting something close to 50/50 or maybe 40% yes, 60% no but this is hilarious and heartening:

  • Don't feel bad or at least don't feel alone. Such is generally my luck too.

  • One thing has become abundantly clear: You, me, and so many others in the comments here need to be in charge of phone design and not whoever's been doing it for the last 10 years.

  • Yeah, I've got all those turned off. Actually, they came disabled by default (one of the OS customizations Minimal does in their base image). I usually turn those to at least .5x on my other phones to make things feel faster, lol, but in this case, they were already off.

But there's still subtle transitions and some animations that aren't affected by that. One of the latter is the animations on the lock screen when you're entering your pin. Those have to be disabled separately in the security settings (and weren't disabled by default by Minimal).

  • Look at it from a new user's perspective; someone who has not curated their feed or otherwise "made the fediverse what they want" yet. e.g. They land on Lemmy World or another big instance and their default sort is "active". Doing that now in an incognito window, and half the front page is rage, same on the second, and the stuff that's not are some random shitposts and Linux filling in.

Truth be told, looking at that, I probably wouldn't want to sign up. Especially if I didn't know that different instances have different cultures, etc.

Assuming they're a normie (which we desperately fucking need here), I just don't see that they'd want to stick around. Aside from trolls and spammers, the only people we seem to consistently attract here are the "Wah wah I was banned from Reddit" types and, while there's certainly a sizable pool to draw from, I wouldn't exactly consider them the pick of the litter for growing the fediverse.

The point of OPs post is that usage here is declining, and I am simply pointing out that I feel all the rage and politics is not particularly inviting.

Edit: And you know what? I'm just going to fucking say it. There's too many armchair activists here who won't let you enjoy a single moment without reminding you that something bad is happening somewhere in the world and that you have some kind of moral obligation to be angry all the time about it. And if you're not angry all the time then you're somehow part of the problem.

  • We had the same thought. Right before I saw your reply, I added some hobby communities to my comment as examples.

This place is so flooded with politics and raging over the news that I'm about to choose a random hobby community that's active and pick up said hobby just to be able to have something besides Star Trek and Linux to talk about here lol.

  • Just my two cents, but there's just no reason for people to come here when it's 80+% political shit and rage bait and virtue signaling. Hell, I've got 80% of the content here filtered out as it is, and I want to be here.

Find your nearest non-political hobby community and start posting things people actually want to see and maybe we might see some growth or people sticking around. My current hyperfixation/hobby is Meshtastic, so I've been pretty active there lately. If that's not your thing, then there's:

If you're like me and not good at any of that, tell us about cleaning your gutters or doing your laundry over in !Dullsters@dullsters.net

The point is, we need more posts about what make us happy and less about what we're angry at (which is pretty much goddamned everything).

  • I'd love to see the keyboards and trackballs manufactured again if for no other purpose than having them available for other projects.

There was a project a while back called Beepberry that was a little handheld Linux thing that used Blackberry keyboards. Among other reasons, the supply of the Blackberry keyboards dried up so the project died.

  • Quite possibly. I don't think I have anything running below A11 that still functions so that's been my baseline. Most recent was my OP3 that had LineageOS's A9 but the battery finally gave up the ghost a few months ago.

  • Yep, to all of that.

disable that annoying "you haven't used those apps in a while so permissions were removed" thigny

AFAIK, you can only do that on an app-by-app basis.

Settings -> Apps -> {App} -> Permissions -> Pause app activity if unused

That's on Android 14, so YMMV if they took that away or made it worse since then.

  • AFAIK, it's just the base Android UI because it's the same in LineageOS and vanilla builds.

    • The quick actions have gone to hell. There's nothing quick about them anymore and customizing them is even worse than it already was.
    • Every UI element is oversized and seems made for the hot doggiest of hotdog fingers
    • The organization of the settings, especially the network/mobile settings, somehow makes even less sense than before
    • You can't configure a wifi profile without a gateway. God forbid I want to do anything on a local network.
    • You can't disable the connectivity checker and Android treats not being able to reach Google with not having internet. And if there's no internet, you have about 5 seconds to catch the prompt to stay connected otherwise it'll disconnect.
    • Even if you do catch the prompt to stay connected to the no-internet wifi, the DNS resolver will not use its DNS server unless you're in airplane mode. I've got a RasPi-based "internet in a box" mobile server that's useless when accessing it via my phone (unless in airplane mode) because I had the sheer audacity to configure it to use proper DNS hostnames and SSL certs.
    • The wallpaper / background config is just awful nowadays. I don't know if that's "Material You" or what, but just let me pick an image or no image or a solid color. Don't present 3 different apps to handle changing the background, two of which do nothing.
    • On the Google side, they're shoving more Gemini shit in
    • Now Google is gatekeeping even the apps you want to sideload
    • Even with animations disabled, there's still too many animations/transitions. I'm using an e-ink phone and this alone just destroys the experience.
    • Gesture navigation is just terrible but at least you can dig through the settings to re-enable 3 button nav
    • A litany of other small gripes
  • I pre-ordered last June and got it toward the end of July. It seems to ship directly from the factory in Hong Kong, so you have to use the tracking link they send you until it clears customs in your country.

I did a first impressions post about it when I got it.

  • I'm really starting to feel like Android 11 is the "Windows 7" of Android.

  • Loudly saying "Computer, end program" is basically part of my morning routine now. So far it hasn't worked, but I keep hoping
