  • Then China is just repeating Brazil. Brazil was one of the few countries that could pull off biofuels in a real way. But it was a unique situation, and it doesn’t work elsewhere.

  • Which is the truth, pretty much everywhere. There simply won't be enough chargers, likely ever.

It's a repeat of what happened to biofuels. It was hyped as the magic solution for fossil fuels, until people began to realize that we weren't in any position to scale up production of biofuels to the levels needed. After a brief period when we fantasized about ideas like cellulosic ethanol or algae oil, which never really happened BTW, we ultimately just gave up on biofuels.

Battery powered cars are likely to do the same thing. We are at the point were we are realizing that this won't scale up. There's going to be a brief period of fantasy solutions to the problem too, but those probably won't happen either. After that, we will move on from BEVs.

  • "Flying cars" are pretty much always shitty helicopters.

  • This is basically how all green energy ideas start. Wind and solar power went through the same thing. What we're seeing are people who dismiss new ideas, either because they're climate change deniers or because they're outdated and don't want to see change they don't understand.

  • This is just a repeat of the same old pro-RISC myths from decades ago. There is very little performance difference between x86 and any RISC based CPU, at least when pertaining to the ISA itself. Apple merely has the advantage of having far more resources available for CPU development than their competitors.

  • Except you have to have overhead powerlines. Not feasible in every location. Otherwise, your trains are diesel powered.

  • You want hydrogen trucks for this. It actually has the energy density needed.

  • You actually want hydrogen trucks. It actually has the energy density needed.

  • Only a stopgap though. Not the true solution.

  • The big problem is that the environmental movement has been hijacked by corrupt business interests. They have effectively gaslighted the entire movement to oppose their own goals. Instead of pushing real solutions like mass transit or hydrogen, they are now wasting huge amounts of resources on idea like battery powered cars. Even carbon capture will be needed eventually.

What is necessary is for the environmental movement to have a major shakeup. It needs to kick out the scam artists and adopt more functional solutions.

  • There will come a day when people will realize that even tech companies aren't worth that much.

  • I suspect there is something more to this than just that. After all, the car in question did this:

Earlier this month, a Cruise robotaxi notably ran over a pedestrian who had been hit by another vehicle driven by a human. The pedestrian became pinned under a tire of the Cruise vehicle after it came to a stop — and then was pulled for about 20 feet (six meters) as the car attempted to move off the road.

It seems like there are unsolvable safety problems going on.

  • Everyone with a brain has left Xitter.

  • I've come to realize that many a tech company are ran by morons.

  • Hydrogen is guaranteed to win this one. Batteries are just another unsustainable greenwashing idea. People are falling prey to BEV propaganda.

  • Tech has become a scam in many areas. It's just doing the same thing as it always has been, just with an abusive corporate master. The goal is to scam the investor into funding bad ideas, or use that funding to undercut the competition. It is rarely about innovation anymore.

  • Are you talking about FCEVs? You can also include directly electrified vehicles, but that is mostly mass transit.

And yes, electrification as a whole will succeed. But BEVs probably are not. I call them fads because they are just toys for the rich and they are unlikely to be affordable for most people.
